Premier League - Ferguson contacts injured Defour

Manchester United's interest in Steven Defour has been thrust back into the spotlight, with a letter sent from Sir Alex Ferguson to the injured Standard Liege captain released to the Belgium media.

Defour is one of the most highly-rated midfielders in Europe and was linked with moves to Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City in the summer.

Belgian side Standard fended off the interest only to see Defour break a bone in his foot last month.

The injury is sure to hinder any possible move in January, but it is clear from the letter than Defour is in Ferguson's thinking.

"Dear Steven, I have just heard about your injury and, in the name of Manchester United, I would like to wish you a full and speedy recovery," read the letter which was published in told Het Laatste Nieuws.

"I am sure at the moment you must be feeling awful and that you'll have all kinds of questions.

"Steven, these are natural worries but I have to tell you that modern medicine and treatments are incredible, you have to have confidence in them.

"I'm going to follow your progress closely and I will remain in contact with your club to have news of your recovery."

Defour is thrilled with the interest from Old Trafford.

"One thing I should like to highlight is that Ferguson has followed his interest officially," said Defour. "He addressed the letter to Standard.

"I think the attention is great, but I do not want people to think I am already at Manchester, which is by no means the case.

"But if they come knocking, then I would obviously not cause problems."

    Fergie is a sly old fox and of course he­ wants to sign the pleyer. He showed the same concern­ for Van Nistlerooy when he was injured prior to a move­ to United. What Fergie has done isn't illegal, nor­ is it corrupt, just good business practice in the world­ of football.

    Listen everybody, Fergie writes­ the rules. End of­ story. There's definitely no­ ' tapping up '­ here.
