Premier League - Liverpool fear Kyrgiakos blow

Eurosport - Thu, 15 Oct 12:11:00 2009

Liverpool are anxiously awaiting news from Greece, with reports suggesting defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The Reds defender was forced off during the first-half of Greece's World Cup qualifier with Luxembourg on Wednesday.

There has been no word from the Greek camp on the severity of Kyrgiakos's knee problem, but reports in the local media suggest he has suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage.

Should the injury be confirmed, it will be a huge blow for Reds boss Rafa Benitez who drafted in the 30-year-old following the departure of Sami Hyypia in the summer.

Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have returned from international duty with knocks and the pair along with Kyrgiakos will be assessed by the club's medical team.

A club statement read: "Sotirios Kyrgiakos will be examined by our medical staff when he returns to Liverpool.

"Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres did not train with the rest of the squad on Thursday but will continue to receive treatment and will be assessed again on Friday."

Kyrgiakos has made one league start for Liverpool so far, but is viewed as ideal cover for Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger.

  1. Agger is such a talented defender but the man's clumsy, how many times since he's been at the club, has he hurt himself? You would be a bit slow to be holding your breath & the nature or Skrtel's game, he's not going to be assuring anyone that he won't be limping from the pitch after getting stuck in.

I know this sounds negative but these are some home truths about some of the guys that are at the club, they need to mature.

  4. Its not a season ending injury?! Its a CAREER ending injury. Cruitiate ligament is the worst long term injury a footballer can sustain. Between ten months and a year of rehabilitation. The f*&ks the matter with you, dont you play champ manager?!

  6. Hope he's allright, but we still have Carragher, Skrtel, Agger and Ayala as an option.. I watched a few reserve games and Mavinga seems to be a good prospect... so we'll be fine

He is a waste of space guys. Did you see he cannot keep up the pace of EPL. He is good for Greek or third class football leagues but EPL. Don't worry you guys will be fine.

    City 4 LIFE.
