Serie A - Onyewu out for four months

Milan will seek damages from the United States Soccer Federation after Oguchi Onyewu suffered a serious knee injury during his country's 2-2 draw with Costa Rica on Wednesday.

US coach Bob Bradley said the defender would be out for up to four months after tearing a patellar tendon in his left knee.

"I'm very angry because once again the national teams take our players and we have to pay the consequences of injuries," Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani was quoted as saying by Italian media.

"We demand compensation from the American Federation because we cannot pay the salary of a player who cannot play for six months."

Onyewu landed badly after jumping for a header, immediately called for assistance and was taken off the field on a stretcher.

The player, who has hardly featured at Milan since joining on a free transfer from Standard Liege in the close season, should recover in time for next year's World Cup finals.

But his injury is another blow to the United States a day after forward Charlie Davies was seriously injured in a car accident.

Davies, who suffered a broken leg among other injuries, remains in hospital and is almost certain to miss the finals.

"We've had two days of tough news," said Bradley. "'Guch' is such an important part of our team. He's young, he's healthy. Our doctors are good but nonetheless, it's another setback for us."

The United States finished top of the CONCACAF group qualifying for South Africa along with Mexico and Honduras.

  1. Both a Milan fan and a USA fan. But screw Milan if they­ want compensation. They are supposed to have insurance­ to cover injuries for players on international duty.­ and if they want to cheat global fans of the players on­ the national teams then they can just go ####­ themselves. Too bad for them if they're too­ incompetent go hold the proper insurance. No wonder­ they've sucked for the past 3 years. Need a new­ owner and new guy running the football operations.­ These old dogs are clearly spending too much time­ scratching themselves and not enough on football.
