The prospect of an Atlantic league including the Old Firm has been backed by clubs from Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden.

Dutch football association president Michael van Praag plans to lobby UEFA in a bid to resurrect a proposal first mooted in the late 1990s before appearing to be consigned to the scrapheap.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell last week branded the concept "Frankenstein" but Rangers counterpart Martin Bain has welcomed moves by Van Praag to resurrect it, though both would rather join the Premier League.

And despite UEFA saying on Wednesday they would be opposed to an Atlantic league, Bain's view is shared by Dutch powerhouses Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, Belgian giants Anderlecht, Danish side Brondby, and Swedish club AIK Stockholm.

Feyenoord spokesman Gido Vader said in the Daily Record: "It is important we don't slip even further behind the rest of the clubs in Europe. We have been having financial problems so it is something we'd all be interested in pursuing."

PSV media chief Pedro Salazar-Hewitt said: "We will always be open for creating a new situation and we know UEFA is aware of this problem. Any talks would be welcome by us."

Anderlecht communications manager David Stegen said: "The Atlantic league would be a formula we would be delighted to be involved in and interested in joining."

Brondby sports manager Anders Bjerregaard said: "We are positive about new actions and we would listen to what the concept is about."

AIK Stockholm sporting director Bjorn Wesstrom said: "We wouldn't rule it out."

But Danish giants FC Copenhagen believe the competition would compromise his club's Champions League ambitions. Club secretary Charles Maskelyne said: "If you are qualifying for the Champions League group stage then when can you fit in an Atlantic league? It is not really an option for us."

  1. Larkie! Old Firm fans supporting their local community teams? I dont know if your aware or not but community is defined many ways. Geographical community is only 1 dentinition. There is also, community of heritage ie Irish/Scots, Chinese/Scots etc. Community of faith Catholic, Protestant, Muslim and Hindu etc. Community of interest punk rock music, photography or snooker etc. If you were to educate yourself a little bit you would realise without a shadow of doubt Celtic and Rangers fans support their own comminities!

  2. The previous Atlantic League proposal disappeared because of the RED HERRING drawn up by the Premiership which suggested that the Old Firm coud get into their league... HA HA...
It was only a suggestion to drag the Scottish teams away from the idea of the Old Atlantic League.

LETS HOPE THE OLD FIRM FANS ARE NOT DELUDED THIS TIME AND SUPPORT THE IDEA OF A NEW ATLANTIC LEAGUE

Non Old Firm fams know that a solution has to be found for the Old Firm ambitions and this seems to be realistic in allowing the Rangers and Celtic to gain bigger TV revenue but they have to accept that they will gain more income but will have only 6 or 7 places to play for to qualify for Europe. Its either that or stay in the Scottish league with guaranteed places in Europe and if they take that option then shut up about
the Scottish scene as Reid and Lalwell of Celtic are forever doing

  3. As A Hibs supporter I have been in favour of an Atlantic League for the past 8 years. It would be able to raise a huge TV audience and that is why the big 5 of England,France,Germany,Italy and Spain are wary of the possibility. If 7 countries within the UEFA want a league that raises their standards.

Why should UEFA stop them. The new Atlantic idea will start with 7 votes and with the possibility of the Eastern European leagues following a similar pattern they could have up to 16 votes for starters.

Scottish footballl will be better for exit of Rangers and Celtic and funny as it may seem it could give Scottish fans a team to support in the higheer European scene.

What would be left would be the opportunity for other Scottish teams to QUALIFY for the Euro Leagues competitions.

Also the Old Firm fans may actually support their local team every second week

I can only see positives for ALL the Scottish teams in the new Atlantic league encompassing Holland,Sweden,Norway,Denmark.Portugal,Scotland and Belgium

  4. Did anyone understand the uefa nutjob say this week that the old firm could possibly play in the English league because there was a precedent that Liechtenstein play in the swiss league. Hasn't he noticed thart Cardiff, Swansea and wrexham all play ALREADY in the english league ( for the monkeys: They are welsh). Monaco is a seperate country and play in the French, Andorra in the spanish, San marino in the Italian and there is a Finnish team that plays in the Swedish league. The only opposition to this is the SFA because for a few years after the old firm move, finances would be tight and the game would suffer. But in the long run the natiuonal team would thrive as most of the players would all be of Scots decent. It's really only the old firm where the majority of players are foreign and that is forcing the smaller clubs to spend more just to compete. Role on the day when the big 2 join england. Thay can have all their money and we can have all the pride.

  5. Isn't the more logical choice to merge the Scottish and English leagues? Or is the thought of both Old Firm clubs in the Championship too painful?

  6. who cares ..... the atlantic league is a @#$% name for a league imo

From the azzurri, on Fri 16 Oct 1:09AM
  7. but the problem is how many places they will have in champions league? if it is 2, then celtic and rangers risk to find themselves in the same situation as hibs, aberdeen, etc. in SPL.The same for the other clubs anyway. It will be a very fought league though, as anderlecht, ajax, standard liege, psv, and the old firms have the same quality. Financially, it may be ok, but how can you attract good players if you can't take part to champions league? Having said that, i reckon for both old firms, playing in Premier league is much better financially, and they won't need champions league to make big money and to attract good players.

  8. Point 1! Most of western Scotland is coasted by the North Atlantic. you not keen on geography?

From Mazz McK, on Thu 15 Oct 11:44PM
  9. 1 - NORTH SEA LEAGUE doesn't quite have the same ring to it. If you think about it, NSL sounds like Barrs Irn Bru Div One, whereas NORTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE (NAL) sounds more like CLYDESDALE BANK SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE.

2 - CSS, only the west of Scotland, mate.

From Singin' Ginger!!, on Thu 15 Oct 9:30PM
  10. If you study where the North Atlantic Ocean is you will see it covers all of Scotland.

From css, on Thu 15 Oct 8:37PM
  11. I thought all these countries were coasted by the North Sea. Would the Atlantic not be Ireland, Canada and the USA, etc???
