Brook Makes Life Kell For McIntyre

Sat 15 Nov, 08:09 AM

Kell Brook warned his challengers they face the same fate as Kevin McIntyre after the British welterweight champion claimed a devastating first-round win over his predecessor.

The Sheffield boxer knocked McIntyre down three times inside two minutes of their eagerly-awaited title fight at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall last night.

The 22-year-old had swaggered into the arena with the air of a young 'Prince' Naseem Hamed and he delivered an explosive display his idol would have been proud of.

McIntyre had gone into the fight determined to win back the title he lost outside the ring after pulling out of two scheduled bouts with Brook in June because of a back injury.

But Brook, who had claimed the title with victory over Barrie Jones, proved without doubt he was the champion.

"I'm top class," he said. "There are a lot of kids shouting my name out. If they want it, they are going to get some of that.

"My plan is to get straight back in the gym. I don't even know if I need a few days off after that.

"But I'm going to work on a few things and whatever Frank (Warren) puts up for me, I'll provide the brilliant performances like I did.

"Let them shout me out, I'm the champion of Great Britain."

McIntyre, 30, suffered the sixth defeat of his career but he looks set to return to the ring.

The Paisley postman told Sky Sports: "I'll go and enjoy some time with my family and decide where we go from here, but I wouldn't like to think I would go out like that.

"I feel in as good nick as I have ever been. These things happen in boxing.

"Don't forget, it happened a few years back with Nigel Wright in the first round. I came back and won the British title.

"I'm devastated just now, but I'll go away and have a think about my career."

There was a better outcome for the home fans when Ricky Burns retained his Commonwealth super-featherweight title.

The Coatbridge fighter stopped tough Ghanaian Yakubu Amidu in the seventh round and is now looking for a world title shot.

Burns, 25, is keen to face the winner of next month's bout between Steve Foster Jr and Nicky Cook, who took the WBO belt from Alex Arthur.

Burns said: "I think Alex Arthur had a bad night and the way he performed, he made Nicky Cook look a lot better than he is.

"It's going to be a good fight between him and Steve Foster, and I want the winner."
