Tony Mowbray feels West Brom will have a "fighting chance" of Premier League survival if he finds a striker with a "hunger to score goals".The Baggies boss is desperate to bring in new faces after seeing his side slump to the foot of the top-flight table.
He will be hindered by a stringent budget at The Hawthorns, with loan signings appearing to represent his best option of bolstering his depleted squad.
Mowbray concedes that the situation facing the Baggies as they head into a crucial stage of the season is far from ideal, but believes it will only get worse if he fails to strengthen in the New Year.
"If we can find a clinical cutting edge then that will make a difference, although our defending has to improve," Mowbray told the Birmingham Mail.
"We need to find someone with the desire, the hunger, the ability to score goals. If we do then I think we will have a fighting chance.
"If we can't find that then we will struggle because we won't score enough goals.
"Every week I seem to talk about opposition strikers. There is no money. We have to find some loans if we can and it is very difficult to find Premier League-quality strikers who are going to score you goals week in, week out.
"Who will give you a Premier League striker on loan? You tell me.
"That's our predicament but not something I fall out with the chairman about.
"He runs our club as a very well-run business. We never carry any debt and we understand that. If we sell anybody we can use that money. If not we'll have to look for loans.
"If we don't bring anyone in then Luke Moore, Roman and Craig (Beattie) will need to step up."

I have never been a huge fan of Peace, he has run a tight ship though and we could have been in a tough spot if we had gone boom and then bust. Look at the other clubs who spent big but failed to make it. He has tried to make the club more saleable by buying up shares but even in doing that he had to wait for a high court challenge to fail by some shareholders.
He personally hasnt got a fortune so can't pile money in the majority of ordinary shareholders are fans who arent going to pile money in. What do you want a centrally owned club with a board who don't have to listen to fans but has more money or a "locally owned/fan orientated" club with no cash?
The 20 mil for being in the Prem doesn't come as a paycheck one day its going to be over the course of the season in increased gates and TV rights. Even then we dont have a shirt sponsor, somewhere else we have lost out.
That said we need more quality, the days of having one 3 mill striker, a couple of young talents with a couple of old hands and staying up are long gone we need a team full of quality, we need a 6 mill striker and some backbone through midfield and defence.
goals for 12 goals against 32 speaks for itself
We knew this before the season started that firepower was going to be the problem! What did we do about it??? ..now suddenly we have no money to spend??? Amazing really when bids were going in for Frazier Campbell, Kevin Thomson etc. on deadline day? Where has that money gone? Whats happened to all the money we recouped from the our sales i.e. Davies' £8m etc. and also where has the estimated £60m for being in the premiership? The £20m we did spent we more than recouped in sales! The board has to go.. they are to blame! They were tight with the KP and Gera deals.. Thats why we are where we are now! Peace off!
Hey what's Kevin Phillips doing these days? LOL
