Newell hails first Blundell Park win

Mon 15 Dec, 12:16 PM

Boss Mike Newell expressed his relief after Grimsby secured their first home win of the season against Shrewsbury on Saturday.Adam Proudlock's solo strike after 53 minutes was enough to give Newell his first success at Blundell Park.

The Mariners manager believes the result was long overdue given recent good performances which have ended in defeat.

"I am happy," Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"The middle of December is a long time to wait before you win your first home game but it has been coming, to be quite honest, and I have been really pleased with them over the past few weeks.

"I just got the feeling that they were up for it. We played against a decent side and you can see why they were second in the league. They like to play football and they have got some quality. So, all in all, to keep a clean sheet is a very good result."
