A first-half goal by Japan midfielder Daisuke Matsui gave Le Mans a 1-0 home win over Lyon and a place in the Coupe de la Ligue semi-finals.

Matsui (pictured) struck from the edge of the box on 28 minutes to send the Ligue 1 leaders tumbling to defeat.

Lyon, chasing a seventh successive league title, looked sluggish at first and then woke up but were denied by a string of great saves from Yohann Pele.

"We thought we would have an easy match and did not treat it seriously enough," said Lyon coach Alain Perrin. "The way we played tonight we would have struggled even against a Ligue 2 side.

"We must use this defeat as a lesson for the matches to come."

Le Mans, seventh in Ligue 1, next meet league strugglers Lens, who advanced with a 3-0 home win over Nancy.

Midfielder Yohan Demont opened the scoring for Lens with an acrobatic volley on 15 minutes and forward Toifilou Maoulida doubled the advantage with an astute lob just before halftime.

Midfielder Olivier Monterrubio wrapped it up with a second-half penalty.

Paris St Germain also advanced by crushing Valenciennes 4-0 despite playing most of the match with 10 men.

PSG took an early lead with a penalty by former Portugal striker Pauleta but had Colombia defender Mario Yepes sent off in the fifth minute for a tackle from behind on Slovakia forward Filip Sebo.

That did not stop the Parisians from delighting their home fans after the break with two goals from Ivory Coast forward Amara Diane and a late effort by former France midfielder Jerome Rothen.

PSG face Auxerre, who knocked out Marseille 1-0 courtesy of a header in added time from midfielder Benoit Pedretti.
