Cobblers blast past lowly Gills

Sat 16 Feb, 07:45 PM

Northampton kept their hopes of reaching the play-offs alive with a 4-0 romp at home to a Gillingham side that faces a tough relegation battle. Two goals from full debutant Adebayo Akinfenwa and efforts from Jason Crowe and substitute Giles Coke gave the Cobblers their biggest win of the season in League One, while Gills are without a victory in seven matches.

The home side went in front with two goals in a minute just before the break, with Crowe firing a sweet right-foot drive beyond Simon Royce and Akinfenwa then heading home a cross by Andy Holt shortly afterwards.

The points were effectively wrapped up eight minutes after the restart when Akinfenwa kept his cool on the edge of the box before firing a shot which went in off a post.

Although the big striker was replaced by Coke, his replacement put the icing on the cake in the 64th minute when his shot from the edge of the box was deflected.
