Serie A - Inter roll on as Roma slip up

Eurosport - Sat, 16 Feb 21:47:00 2008

Internazionale capitalised on a slip-up by Roma to extend their lead at the top of the Serie A table to 11 points.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Serie A Inter-Livorno Suazo - 0

A David Suazo brace gave the champions and runaway league leaders a comfortable 2-0 win over Livorno in the early kick-off before the nearest title rivals Roma fell to a 1-0 defeat to Juventus later in the day.

Alessandro Del Piero's wonderful free-kick fired Juve to victory as Claudio Ranieri's side moved to within a point of the Giallorossi in second place.

In the third game of the day, the Milan were held to a second straight stalemate in a disappointing goalless draw in Parma.

Internazionale 2-0 Livorno

At the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Inter showed no sign of slowing in their pursuit of their third straight title as Roberto Mancini's side cruised to all three points against a tired-looking Livorno, who failed to recreate their form of midweek, when they took a point off Milan.

Both of Suazo's goals came in the first half and - a brief spell after the break apart - the visitors never realistically looked like getting back into the match and taking anything back to Tuscany with them.

The win lifts Inter - who come up against Arsenal in the Champions League next week - 11 points clear of second-placed Roma, who are in action later against third-placed Juventus.

Suazo got the ball rolling just before the quarter-hour mark, taking advantage of some slack marking in the Livorno box to rise unopposed and head home Maicon's well-delivered free kick.

The Honduran then doubled the champions' lead just four minutes later as Maxwell's cross from the right flank caused havoc in the visitors' box. Alessandro Diamanti made a hash of his attempted clearance, and Suazo swooped to fire past Marco Amelia in the Livorno goal.

Suazo could, and perhaps should, have then completed his hat-trick before the opening period was up, but he swung and missed Hernan Crespo's cross as the half-time whistle approached.

Amelia had been kept busy during the opening period, and the keeper did well to make saves from Crespo, Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso to keep the scoreline respectable.

Livorno rarely threatened at the other end, but the visitors did manage to fashion two chances in a minute that could well have altered the outcome the game. First, Daniele De Vezze's 61st minute free-kick cannoned back off an upright before Jose Luis Vidigal's diving header seconds later was well saved by Julio Cesar.

But Inter weathered the mini-storm and Cambiasso went close to making it three on soon after, Amelia pulling a save right out of the top drawer to deny the Argentinian a goal and his side a third.

Juventus 1-0 Roma

At the Stadio Olimpico it took Del Piero's thunderbolt to separate the two sides, although Juventus probably edged the game as Roma struggled to find their usual rhythm.

The evergreen Italy striker put the hosts into the lead just prior to half-time after Philippe Mexes's trip on Pavel Nedved resulted in a free-kick 25 yards out.

Doni in the Roma net did his best to keep out the shot, but such was power and precision with which it was struck, he did not even get close. It was Del Piero's tenth goal of the season.

Roma came close to pulling level almost immediately afterwards, Juventus defender Nicola Leggrotaglie very nearly skewing an attempted sliding clearance into his own net, only for the upright to come to his rescue.

Del Piero had earlier been presented with a great chance to open the scoring, but his 29th minute header from a standing position went straight at a grateful Doni.

Roma struggled to find a way through the Juve defence, although Daniele De Rossi forced Gigi Buffon into an acrobatic save to keep out his 30-yard free-kick in the 76th minute.

But other than that, the Giallorossi lacked a cutting edge up front, something coach Luciano Spalletti needs to address immediately if his side are to overhaul Inter's sizable lead.

Parma 0-0 Milan

At the Stadio Ennio Tardini, Parma enjoyed the better of the opening period, only for Milan to regain their composure and nearly take all three points after creating more than enough chances to nick a winner after the break.

Despite dropping two points for the second time this week - following Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Livorno - the result nonetheless propelled Milan into fourth place, ahead of Fiorentina, who play Catania at home on Sunday, on goal difference.

Parma came close to opening the scoring on 34 minutes, when Reginaldo forced Zeljko Kalac to tip over a flicked-on header, but the hosts' best chance fell to Andrea Pisanu four minutes later; however he failed to make contact with the goal gaping in front of him.

As Milan came more into the game in the second half, Kaka went close for the visitors, bringing a fine save out of Luca Bucci with a typically stylish volley on 68 minutes.

With the scores still locked at 0-0 as full-time approached, both sides had chances to nick it at the death. Milan midfielder Emerson blazed over the bar when presented with a decent shooting opportunity before Parma substitute Igor Budan forced Kalac into a smart save in injury time.
