Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington did not suffer a serious knee injury during the 1-1 FA Cup draw with Manchester City and could be back within a fortnight.
The club had feared the worst when the former Tottenham and West Ham man twisted awkwardly early in the weekend match but a scan showed his cruciate ligament was still intact.
"The news is as good as it could be at this stage," boss Tony Pulis told the club website. "If the cruciate ligament had been damaged then it would have been a long lay-off but we're now hoping that he will be back in action sooner rather than later."
Etherington has been a key player for the Potters this season, with recent performances leading to him being tipped for an England call.
But Pulis feels his squad is capable of covering in his absence.
"There have been players in the squad pushing for a chance and this presents an opportunity for someone to step up and play a big part over the next few matches while Matty is on the sidelines."
