We round up the headlines from all the big papers and some choice words from the top football writers after the crushing 4-0 defeat.
++
Daily Mirror: Fairytale? More like a nightmare
John Cross: No fairytale farewell for Thierry Henry this time. The Arsenal legend said goodbye after a humiliating night at the San Siro in what should be an unpleasant wake-up call for Arsene Wenger. This Arsenal side were beaten in such a fashion that maybe - just maybe - even Wenger might realise that relying on former heroes doing them a favour is simply not enough.
++
Daily Mail: Demolished
Martin Samuel: Arsenal never found the tempo to test Milan and there was only one winner here. Milan looked wiser, yet more youthful; better organised, yet took more risks; faster, yet more measured in their play. They bossed Arsenal, the way Italian teams used to boss games each year in this competition. It looked a throwback tie and Arsenal’s role was that of innocents abroad.
++
The Sun: Humiliated
Steven Howard: Arsenal died of shame in the San Siro last night. Arsene Wenger had warned how the problems affecting English football swept from club to club like a forest fire. And how a stiff wind can blow them back in your face all too quickly. So it was as Arsenal were reduced to ashes, with their defence imploding in what proved their biggest Champions League loss.
++
The Times: Wenger sees failing ruthlessly exploited
Matt Hughes: On the basis of this shambolic performance Arsenal's days among European football's elite look numbered after 14 successive years in Europe's premier club competition. As Arsenal's disconsolate players trudged off the pitch after a final whistle they had been hoping to hear for most of the second half, it felt like the end of an era, and not just because Thierry Henry will never play for them again.
++
The Independent: Arsene and Arsenal are living in the past
James Lawton: Milan looked like a team who had been surely redirected towards some of the best of their past. They had an easy, biting rhythm, so coherent at times that Arsenal seemed to be playing a different game. They were a team who looked without a touch of self-belief – and certainly one utterly unconvinced by their manager's talk of the imminence of fresh glory. The despairing reflection has to be framed in one question: if Wenger can't make Arsenal believe in themselves, who can?
++
Daily Star: San Zeros fail to fix 7-year itch
Brian Woolnough: For 45 minutes here at the San Siro last night Arsene Wenger’s side were exposed for what they are, ordinary. Their vulnerable defence bent and creaked like an old tree in the wind while none of their ‘big’ players responded to this challenge. They were 2-0 down at half-time and it could have been at least two more.
++
Daily Express: Arsenal are nowhere in this league
John Dillon: Their performance was so superior it made you wonder where, exactly, they have been during the past five years since they defeated Liverpool in the final in Athens. And how it had been that Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham had all won so comfortably here since. It made Arsenal look like a club drifting far from the position of respect and stature they once enjoyed in this competition, even if they only once came close to winning it, in 2006.
++
The Guardian: Humiliation exposes Gunners' standing among the elite
Richard Williams: This was a display that underlined the painful truth of the 17 points separating Wenger's team from the Premier League leaders and revealed how much work remains to be done before claims of a revival can be made with any confidence.
++
The Daily Telegraph: Wenger must break up this side to save himself
Paul Hayward: Power has been slipping from Arsenal for seven years now, since their last trophy. When it drops away incrementally, the loss of strength can be covered up with talk of prudence and faith in sacred principles. But some days that power splinters and crashes. It makes awful wrenching sounds, as it did when Milan humiliated the Gunners on a patchwork pitch.

wenger has gotta get firedd
STOP RIGHT NOW WENGER!!!!before you ruin this great club ,i've heard this all before ,about clear out's & that the club have money to spend???.Were simply fed-up,heard it all before for 6yrs & counting and to make matters worse!!where breaking all the records that arsenal have never got this year alone,even before the season is still yet to end,what next???We are not going to finish in the top six anyway,another record since wenger took over,So ,i think we are heading towards a very dark tunnel,get rid before we hit the cliffs.First one to go pls( pat rice)we need an assistant who can voice matters & not just sit like a muppet looking glum like wenger throwing bottles,then the big clear-out if it ever happens(walcott/arshavin/diaby/rosicky/mersecker/djouru o/gibbs/chamakh & all those on loans to clubs around the globe.In arsene we rust until he departs.
May be Wenger will stop his funny blog about sport. He thinks he is an expert and that is a biog problem.
Julius: far from finished. If you think so i think you should take a look 16 places below us...? hello?
Lord of Time, if the Arabs actually gift the money (or a player) to City, as opposed to ''investing'' in it, then they can get whatever player they want. City spending will only stop when the Arabs leave. Simples.
I am a gooner, but I can tell you, we are finished unless we can take drastic action
Well said LOT! I feel our team is stale, and that is in part thanks to Wenger, but none of us know exactly how much his hands are tied. Many a report has come out from Arsenal as to our situation, yet most on these boards ignore them, wanting everything NOW, and wont wait. I guess thats a sign of the times. Numerous issue are playing a part in relation to Arsenals current stature, so just as a reminder lets go over them.
1) The Board demand Wenger makes 15 mill profit every season. 2) We have stadium debt. 3) we have a shirt sponsor deal that is beneficial for the SPONSOR not us, 4) We have a wage cap. 5) We have the Financial Fair play rules to consider.
------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------
Weng er could have done better in the transfer market. The board will feel the pinch if we continue on this road. The stadium debt. Plan is that we pay if off by 2015 (i think that was the initial idea, dunno if its changed)
The shirt sponsor deal is currently being renegotiated (if it doesnt happen we have to wait till 2014)
Wage cap...well its needed in football in general, but we probably should look into increasing it just a little.
The financial fair play rules will be fully in effect by 2014/15 If they actually work the way FIFA want them to.
There is a solid working plan in place till 2014, when Wengers contract expires, so I do not expect him to get the boot before then. (unless plastic fans do walk out on the club and force the Board to take drastic action)
So I think we should all just get behind our team and limit our expectations. The plan is until 2014, and if you have a plan stick to it! I will remain probably frustrated, but understanding till then. If by 204/15 I see no change, that's when I will get angry.
I am glad Milan won this one Milan 4 Arsenal 0
so many people saying spend spend spend, hello have you forgotten the new fair play rules or are you really that stupid, wenger's problem is he is always trying to build for the future, but things always gets in the way like city offering mega wages, if you want a city type team go and support them because this is the only season they have a chance with, as of the summer they have to sell to buy, but no one will pay the same wages therefore the players wont leave, so what if arsenal are having a very bad season, but with all the problems with injuries and bans at the beginning i say arsenal have done well to be 4th, tell me which club in the prem could do better with all the injuries and bans arsenal have had, arsenal have had major players injured, arsenal have not played with a full strength team at all this season, granted arsenal were really bad against milan but so what, at least arsenal have stayed in the CL longer than man utd and man city, also look at the team we had, if you put in the injured players what sort of team then, for the idiot who still reckons wenger has done bad since the likes of adams and co, have you forgotten the time we didnt get beat at all in the league, the defence was all wengers doing, not one was from george graham, also the player bashing has got so bad you are bashing players who have yet to play more than 15 mins, as for the year no title, try waiting 18 years, but in guessing most of you are glory hunters who only like arsenal when they are on top, so you dont have to say your a man utd fan.
BTW has no one noticed that arsenal have not won anything of note since being sponsored by Fly Emirates, makes you wonder doesnt it.
this just YET AGAIN proves how laughable the claim of "the best league in the world" is! e.p.l. high-fliers usually end up getting a mauling from the REAL class act leagues,the very best teams of e.p.l. get destroyed when they come up against the superior skill and quality of barcelona,real madrid,a.c. milan and bayern munich, they just dont have what it takes any more.
and the morons who persist in believing (if they REALLYdo) in that stupid claim are sadly deluded.
Not wanting to put the boot in as I support any domestic team playing in Europe, but they were very poor indeed. No spirit, no urgency, no pace, no gameplan, no idea. Arteta and Song were ballwatching passengers that offered no cover for the defence who did what they could but were powerless in the face of constant attacks. Gibbs and Sagna offered nothing going forward and were ordinary at the back. Rosicky must be on borrowed time surely, at least I hope so for Arsenal's sake - how much possession did he weakly surrender? Extremely pedestrian, one-paced with diabolical distribution. And Ramsey, what did he do? But for a header that sailed over the bar you'd be hard pressed to notice him on the pitch. As a result Henry and Van Persie were starved of any decent service.
I think Wenger is about as good a coach as the Gunners can hope for, but clearly he is being hampered in the transfer market. They are spending less now than 10 years ago!
A question for Arsenal supporters in the know out there. Where is the money going? Regular top four finishers (SKY bonus money), 15 straight years in the Champions League earning some serious coin, brand spanking new stadium boasting the highest ticket prices in the country, huge profits made on the likes of Toure, Fabregas, Nasri, Adebayor etc and yet the manager is still bargain basement shopping!
How long before Van Persie decides enough is enough?
Wenger NEEDS to spend - and spend big or I see all his good work going down the pan. The biggest question for me is, will he jump or finally be pushed?
Sad to see. English football's loss will someone else'e gain
Wenger has gave us football that was a pleasure to watch, but his record is an interesting read. Take a look at how many trophies he has won since all the back five he inherited have left. Not as impressive as you thought, is it.
Almunia, Fabianski, Djourou, Squillaci, Jenkinson, Santos, Ramsey, Rosicky, Diaby, Walcott, Arshavin, Chamakh, Park, Vela, Bendtner. All draining our club of millions of pounds in wages and producing mediocrity at best. None would have even made the bench eight years ago. This is Arsene's legacy and rebuilt side. I think it is time for him to go and please take that American tit, Kroenke, with him!!!!
Paul C - totally agree with your assessment of the situation matey! Pat Rice hinted to the media at the end of last season that he was gonna retire: he should actually have done just that, there & then: for like Wenger he seems to have run out ideas.
Consider Alex Ferguson. He never allows staleness; complacency, or inflexibility to breed & fester at Man U, under his leadership as a manger. He regularly freshens up his coaching staff with new people: who have different revolutionary ideas; approaches; philosophies, and knowledge so as to help him keep Man U at the summit of our game.
Where is this recognition that he doesn't know all the answers, and that he needs to find people who do in Arsene Wenger???
Great shout about Tony Adams as defensive coach! I'd be more than happy to see either him or Martin Keown being given that role. Martin still spends a lot of time around the club, therefore he could easily do the job.
Besides Dennis Bergkamp, I would like to see someone like Ray Parlour working with our midfield players, and instilling in them (along with Tony and/or Martin) the British Bulldog Spirit & attitude they are clearly missing.
Ideally I would love to see Viera do the job either with, or alongside Parlour. Even though he's working for City, I'm sure if Arsenal came begging with a substantial financial offer: he would return "home": for Arsenal is in his blood!
As for a new manager; besides Guardiola (if he choses to stay at Barcelona, or to go elsewhere?); I would be more than happy with Mourinho - even with all his controversy. Also in the frame should be Paul Lambert; Brendan Rodgers; Allan Pardew, or maybe even David O'Leary??? (now that would be something eh!)
Almunia, Djourou, Squillaci, Mertesecker, Diaby, Rosicky, Walcott, Ramsey, Arshavin, Vela, Bendtner, Fabianski, Chamakh, Park. Hardly a list of successful transfers. None of these would have even made the bench eight years ago yet they are paid plenty of money to produce mediocrity. Sad to say but I believe Arsene should go.
Now Now thats ok this has all just been a bad dream. 4 - 0 ha ha
But when the mighty SPURS beat you at home again 5 - 0 thats what you will call a wake up call !!!!
COYS
I think Kroenke should f.u.c.k. off back to the USA and let Usmanov and David Dein sort this mess out. Whether that is with or without Arsene Wenger I don't care. Wouldn't mind Gis Hiddink with Dennis Bergkamp as his no.2.
I'm an Arsenal supporter of 43 years (since age of 7), so I am used to Arsenal promising much and often failing, and sometimes delivering us a bit of glory. But the self-delusion that exists in Wenger's mind is unbelievable. We have not been a serious title challenging side for 5 or 6 years, and we have not even been the entertaining side we were known as, for about 4 years. So, what is left is a side that has few world-class players, and a mass of middle table journeymen (Arshavin, Djouro, Rosicky to name a few). Ask yourself, which Arsenal players would get into the 1st XI of Europe's top 10 clubs? (And if you say Walcott, then please seek immediate mental health care). I doubt if more than a few would be wanted by top half of the table clubs in the Premier League.
I don't expect us to win the PL or the CL (we simply don't have the money) but I expect us to finish 4th in the PL and not embarrass ourselves in the CL.
The experiment was entertaining for a while, but it has run its course and proven to be based on a false premise.
Wenger should go, and it's reality. I don't understand the Arsenal supporters, they should start to Demand for him to leave. Mouring is the GOD that ARSENAL is waiting for, but he wouldn't like to have his bum to be kissed .like Wenger has with present ARSENAL supporters. Wenger has to go, there's no other alternative.
