Champions League - Wenger slams 'worst ever performance'

Thu, 16 Feb 08:57:00 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger branded his side's 4-0 defeat by AC Milan their worst ever performance in Europe.

2011-12 Champions League Arsenal Arsene Wenger - 0

"We were never in the game, we were very poor offensively and defensively, and it was shocking to see how were beaten everywhere," he said after the Champions League round of 16 first leg at the San Siro.

"It was our worst performance in Europe by far, there was not one moment we were really in the game."

The north London side went behind to a stunning early strike from Kevin-Prince Boateng before two goals from Robinho and a Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty piled on the misery.

"We had to chase the game, open up our game. It was always the same for us, balls over the top, it's difficult to analyse. It's better not to talk too much and to analyse with a cool head," Wenger added.

"We will focus on our next games and although the result is a disaster, the season is not finished."

He said he did not feel Arsenal had made big tactical mistakes but acknowledged there was almost no hope of reversing the scoreline in next month's second leg.

"We did not have many other choices, we were weak in some departments, and I knew we could have some problems in some areas but I did not feel we would not score a goal tonight," the Frenchman said.

"Let's be realistic, we don't play in dream world, maybe there is a two per cent or five per cent chance statistically, realistically we are out of this competition."

  1. All rhetoric is getting boring, been going on for many years re what Arsenal need to do in order to win something. Perhaps their are two issues here, firstly why arn't the coaches doing their job properly? If they were perhaps Arsenal would be flying. Secondly and more importantly the question of money. Why isn't Arsenal spending the money that Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd have been spending? This really needs to be looked at if Arsenal are going to succeed. Perhaps Wenger should be screaming & shouting more regularly, it won't hurt the over payed players. Get rid of Chamakh, Arshavin, alumina, Walcott ( he is not improving ) Djouru, I am not convinced that Gervinho is the end product. Sadly, I can see van Persie, handing in his resignation letter at the end of the season. AC Milan were not that good, Arsenal were so poor on the night that they made Milan look good. If Wenger and the board do not start spending on ready made quality players, I see Arsenal slipping into the next divan in a couple of seasons.

  2. STOP RIGHT NOW WENGER!!!!before you ruin this great club ,i've heard this all before ,about clear out's & that the club have money to spend???.Were simply fed-up,heard it all before for 6yrs & counting and to make matters worse!!where breaking all the records that arsenal have never got this year alone, even before the season is still yet to end, what next???We are not going to finish in the top six anyway, another record since wenger took over,So ,i think we are heading towards a very dark tunnel, get rid before we hit the cliffs.First one to go pls( pat rice)we need an assistant who can voice matters & not just sit like a muppet looking glum like wenger throwing bottles, then the big clear-out if it ever happens(walcott/arshavin/diaby/rosicky/mersecker/djouru o/gibbs/chamakh & all those on loans to clubs around the globe. In arsene we rust until he departs.

  3. 184, you are so wrong with your "I wonder where English football would end up without Arab-Russian-Indian money. Probably somewhere near Romania's football !!"
It was the success (financially and on the pitch) of the English premier league that has made/encouraged these entrepenuers to choose to invest in the league and clubs. Would you invest in a league that was not secure? Why would Abramovic invest up to 1 billion pounds, or the Americans at Man Utd or Villa?
Yes, some of the investments have not borne as much success, but the money did not make the league. It has brought in some fantastic players that have improved the profile of the league, but it did not make the league/English football!!!

  4. From the way he refused to buy players to then buy frantically towards the end of January window shows he actually has not strategy and surely no plan B. I am surprised people are surprised Arsenal are poor. For 5 years they haven't even finished 2nd. What more evidence you want?

  5. Wenger has lost touch with reality and certainly lost it tactically. Even if we agree he has restrictions from the board as regards expenses on transfer, the performance on the pitch is not sanctioned by the board. why would Aaron Ramsey be allowed on the pitch despite his woeful performances? why cant two strikers play when the tide turns against the team? what is the reason behind playing Arteta deep instead of pushing up an attack? why wont the players shoot when there is an opportunity instead of seeking out RVP all the time? why cant the DEFENSIVE SYSTEM at Arsenal be reviewed _he's been having the same problem at the defense in the four years running and nothing has been done to solve them? Lack of depth has been one of the serious problems at arsenal yet he depletes the team yearly without replenishing even with average players. Redknaap has been successful at Tortenham despite the perceived low profile players who we now see as world class. The likes of Demba Ba are a testimony to the fact that you mustn't invest too much on players before you get results. Its simply heart-rending to see a team you support run aground so often at a point in the season when they are supposed to pick up and in my opinion, it all boils down to the performance of the manager on and off the pitch.

  7. What a humiliation of a limetime for Arse-n-Winer... I thought he was chasing 4 trophies this season??? What happened to that??... All I can do is sit back and laugh... Ha Ha Ha... Useless french fart has taken a perfectly good team and left it in tatters... He should be sacked in the worst possible way... I hope for the sake of the players Arsenal can salvage some pride back home in the next leg... For the time being they have to bear the Shame brought on to them by their utterly useless so called "Manager" who does not even deserve the job of cleaning the locker and dressing room toilets... It was simply a "Massacre in Milan".

  8. A message for true supporters, I feel our team is stale, and that is in part thanks to Wenger, but none of us know exactly how much his hands are tied. Many a report has come out from Arsenal as to our situation, yet most on these boards ignore them, wanting everything NOW, and wont wait. I guess thats a sign of the times. Numerous issue are playing a part in relation to Arsenals current stature, so just as a reminder lets go over them.
    1) The Board demand Wenger makes 15 mill profit every season. 2) We have stadium debt. 3) we have a shirt sponsor deal that is beneficial for the SPONSOR not us, 4) We have a wage cap. 5) We have the Financial Fair play rules to consider.
    ------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------
Weng er could have done better in the transfer market. The board will feel the pinch if we continue on this road. The stadium debt. Plan is that we pay if off by 2015 (i think that was the initial idea, dunno if its changed)
The shirt sponsor deal is currently being renegotiated (if it doesnt happen we have to wait till 2014)
Wage cap...well its needed in football in general, but we probably should look into increasing it just a little.
The financial fair play rules will be fully in effect by 2014/15 If they actually work the way FIFA want them to.
There is a solid working plan in place till 2014, when Wengers contract expires, so I do not expect him to get the boot before then. (unless plastic fans do walk out on the club and force the Board to take drastic action)
So I think we should all just get behind our team and limit our expectations. The plan is until 2014, and if you have a plan stick to it! I will remain probably frustrated, but understanding till then. If by 204/15 I see no change, that's when I will get angry.

  11. i think that the line up was wrong and definitely Arsenal has no defence, weak defence.
Arsenal needs definitely to spend for good players ,Arsenal needs a strong defence.
I think arsenal should give more responsibility to Ramsey and Arteta, and in front line up chamberlain,VPS and walkott. After 60mn if not winning bring Archavin and Chamakh.
i think in defence if Samba and Cahill were there will be different story.

  13. Absolutely disgusting football, I really cannot stand to watch Arsenal any more. They played like a Sunday team, they appeared to be passing the ball backwards rather than forward throughout the game and they passed the ball too much and lacked pace. I thought I had seen it all from Arsenal but this match topped the lot........disaster

  16. well i think that if arsenal are going to be a top 4 team in future years then before the board panic and sack wenger they should tell the truth about how much money he is realy allowed to spend in the transfer market. as unless van persie is convinced that he can win medals at arsenal he will go else where. stan kronke should invest in the Squad and allow wenger to buy experienced quality players not just reliy on pertential

  19. Ramsey and Rosicky should never be in the same lineup. from this Gunner fan, Arsene didn't take enough of the blame for poor tactics. If he'd have gone to Oxlade-Chamberlain from the start, Arsenal would've gotten a goal in the first half and there might be a chance to come back at the Emirates in a few weeks.

As for AC Milan tearing apart the defense, yes, the injury hurt, but the time to shore up the defense was January and the number of moves made was zero, none, sip, nada. Wenger needed to make a grab.

From Bob T., on Thu 16 Feb 23:28
  20. Sack the board. Get rid of Stan Kronkoe and get better backroom staff for Wenger. And stop pointing finger at Wenger. Dont get me wrong he is an average coach tactically. There are good managers around to replace Wenger in case we decide to get rid of him or he resigns. Managers like Frank Rijkaard, he managed a big club in Barcelona, that has a the same football model like Arsenal, Johan Cruyff, Ottmar Hitzfeld, and Louis Van Gaal, they ve all won champions league in the past and their teams played good football with better results. Stop the no one to replace wenger saying. With wenger's salary trust me these managers wiil take the job.
