Euro 2012 - Redknapp open to part-time role

Harry Redknapp would be open to the idea of managing England at Euro 2012 this summer while remaining in charge of Tottenham.

He insists, however, that it would be "impossible" to marry both jobs on a long-term basis, claiming such a move would hamper the national side's chances of success and be "unfair" on the Tottenham fans who supported him during his recent tax evasion trial.

Redknapp is the overwhelming favourite to succeed Fabio Capello as England boss after the Italian's shock resignation last week.

The Football Association are keen to appoint an Englishman and Redknapp fits the bill having built up his reputation during a stellar three-year period at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp had previously hinted that he would only consider taking charge of England on a long-term basis, but the 64-year-old now appears willing to take on a dual role for a short period.

"In the long term it's not possible to manage a club team and manage a national team," he said.

"It's difficult enough to manage in the Premier League without having to worry about managing the England team as well. You want to be watching England players play, you want to be watching the opposition.

"I think whoever they give the job to could only do the one job.

"Maybe for the Euros, it's not such a problem but once the Euros are finished and the new season starts in England, the manager has to be a Premier League manager - if it's someone who manages in the Premier League - or the England manager. To do the two jobs, it would be impossible."

  1. Why not be radical and be trend setters and have more than one coach/manager. Sure, one may have to make a final decision on the day but that's how all clubs work in any case, so why not trust two or three good men to coach and organise the matches.
Redknapp with Pearce for continuity, maybe Platt who's doing well at Citeh as assistant managers, to share the overall load, watch players and generate a genuine Club atmosphere with England? It puts in a English manager progression process as well which we've never properly achieved. We already have a mix of specialist people training the squads, so it comes down to group decision making on the match days, which is normal and they could all be part time posts with a bit of juggling !! The past hasn't worked, so why not think outside the box for a change !!

  2. Manging both club National team on partime basis is ok, only untill end of Euro 2012, after Harry must make a big decision club or country.

  3. The England job's a poisoned chalice Harry! England will never be any good until they put a cap on the number of foreign players allowed to play for any one club and more English players are given a go at the top level. Stay at Spurs Harry, where you've been successful and where you're loved! You're the best manager we've had in decades!

  4. Harry, stay at Tottenham, Super Tottenham, stay at Tottenham, at the Lane. Stay at Tottenham, Super Tottenham, stay at Tottenham, at the Lane!

  5. Not convinced Rednapp will be that good. His best attribute is finding players, usually bargain players, a lot of those players are foreign.

  8. lanesar - he won the fa cup with portsmouth which is a big deal for a club like that and im not 100% sure but i think he got them promoted into the premiership

  9. Exactly what has Redknap achieved prior to Tottenham, am I missing the point!

  10. Of course he is cunning, if its offered he will take it. He thinks it is the top job and he thinks he is the top man, There is very little difference between Redknap and Mourinhio. He thinks of himself and not the team, I believe he will drop Tottenham if the worst comes to the worst.

  11. What a shrewd move by Redknapp. Take over England for the Euros, if it's a failure, he still has a job at Spurs, if it's a success he still has a job at Spurs until the world cup qualifiers! COYS. But all this hype is for nothing, trust me the FA will go for another yes man in Roy Hodgson, guaranteed.

  13. with all these ifs and buts stuart pearce is the best long term choice, he knows the players and the england set up. redknapp is on a fantasy ego trip, which is no good in the long term. he is also a wheeler dealer, not suited to the national side. he might be popular as one of the boys but please FA forget him.

From K DICKINSON, on Fri 17 Feb 6:03
  14. Harry to do the job part time for the Euros, if it turns out to be a good display by England he will stay, if it turns out to be a compete disaster, he will stay at Spurs.

  15. Stay awa y Harry , its poison chalice. Let big Mike drink it. Englands problems are not going to be solved by a manager thet are cast in stone with the Premier League set up.

  16. he either wants the job or not, stop messing about and tell the f.a so everyone can get on with the prep for the tournament. trying to be too clever is what got him into trouble with the inland revenue.

    From noggin5180, on Fri 17 Feb 4:49
  17. Harry is a really cunning man. He goes to Europe with England and if he does well, he is a legend, but if he doesn't he would say he inherited a tough task after Cappelo quitting just before the tournament and before you know it he is back winning with Spurs. The guy should run for Prime Minister.

  18. Agreed it's a part time job.. And very costly ! save the money

  19. manager of england is a part time job anyway........he could watch players throughout season with spurs and still take training with england and let joe and boys take charge of spurs when ness'.......he will have far more success with this group of players plus a few new boys and really go for it.why throw that away for england and all the probs that brings?
