Keothavong, Wozniacki knocked out in Doha
Wed, 15 Feb 15:49:00 2012
British number two Anne Keothavong was sent crashing out of the Qatar Open by Agnieszka Radwanska in a second-round straight-sets defeat.
The British number two, who had to qualify for the event, never got going against the fourth-seeded world number six and indeed seemed to struggle with an arm injury during the 6-1 6-2 loss.
Her exploits this week should still be enough to see her climb from her current world ranking of 89th.
Radwanska will next face Varvara Lepchenko, who upset 16th seed Julia Goerges 7-6(4) 7-6(5).
Elsewhere, second seed Caroline Wozniacki was the biggest second-round causality.
The Dane, who was playing in her first match in the tournament after being granted a first-round bye, was beaten 4-6 6-4 7-6(3) by Lucie Safarova.
There was no drama for world number one Victoria Azarenka though as she ruthlessly dispatched Mona Barthel 6-1 6-0.
WTA Doha - round 2
Sixth seed Vera Zvonareva was forced to retire during the second set of her match with Romania's Monica Niculescu.
The Russian was trailing 7-5 3-2 before a hip injury meant she could no longer continue. It is the second consecutive week she has been forced to quit with the ailment.
Eighth seed Jelena Jankovic is also out – she crashed 7-6(3) 6-2 to Shahar Peer – while seventh seed Francesca Schiavone suffered a similar fate in losing to Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(4) 6-4.
Fifth seed Marion Bartoli had an easier time of things – winning 6-2 6-0 against Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues – while 14th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Maria Kirilenko in an all-Russian clash. Third seed Samantha Stosur also enjoyed a 6-4 7-6(5) victory over Sorana Cirstea.

#33 Dean/ aaditya !
I have been telling U guys for a long time now
This guy does not have the intellectual acumen to debate an issue
So he resorts to all sort of dirty and unwelcomed personal attacks .
--Con is 90% JACKASS !!! and I am being kind .
Just humor him and be kind as no matter how hard you try ,you will NEVER be able to hold an intellectual discussion with him.
Wayn. The thing is a player of that ranking losing this early in a pretty average event, would not be a headline story on a website in france or germany. It's just not a big deal. yes, it's hard to get a top 100 ranking but coverage should still be commensurate with your ranking and ability. It's not headline news that Anne Keothavong lost easily in the second round. If they get this kind of coverage for this, what would occur if they managed to make a GS quarter-final or last 16?
So many seeds dropped as well so why are you making such a fuss about Wozniacki? She's not no. 1 anymore
'Murray Mug Little Englander's Here'.
Top GB women playing in the main draw: of course they deserve media coverage, and more. Does anyone know just how good you need to be to get anywhere near the WTA top 100 ? On the GB men's side, take Murray out of the equation what have you got ? Mediocrity.
Ubilicious. Again you just nailed it. This has been my point all along. Mediocre results from these two women should not receive the same coverage as the results of the outstanding Murray but they do and it's wrong.
@DEAN, I understand your deduction from opinion about the media coverage your 'below-average' athletes get .I respect that too especiially because I know you guys are generally very patriotic. But I still think that the media over there are too reckless. And what makes it so sad today is that tabloid-style reporting has been adopted by your sports journalist. I won't bbe surprised if we start getting updates on Murrays shopping must-haves on this site. We don't need to hear about these three ladies as often as we do bc this site is visited by other nationals, but I can't complain if I hear about guys like murray, o sullivan, ohurogu because they are truly talented with a good amount of titles won to show for their efforts
if only safarova were more consistent but evertime u think she's on a roll she has terrible losses to lower ranked players! she did well yesterday, didnt choke when wozniacki just pushed the ball around!
Yeah! It was easy! HaHa! Easy lemon sqeezy!
I simply have to say Safarova played some incredible tennis.Having seen how many ferocious winners she hit I was mightily impressed.I dare say if she consistently plays like that in the future the very probable result will be her place in top 5.
