Bent raves over Weimann

Darren Bent has given his backing to fellow Aston Villa team-mate Andreas Weimann and tipped him to become "a top striker".

Austria Under-21 international Weimann has impressed Bent with his finishing ability.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Watford and had a second spell at Vicarage Road this season before being recalled by Villa.

England striker Bent said: "Andy is one of the best natural finishers I have seen for a long time. In training, he never seems to miss the target.

"He is always on the scoresheet. He has all the attributes to be a top striker. He reminds me quite a bit of Dean Ashton, who was a hell of a finisher before he had to retire."

Weimann, who signed a new three-year contract in August, made his Premier League debut 18 months ago and also appeared in the Europa League for Villa.

  1. McLeish wants to bring him through carefully. out on load until he is about 24. then 2 or 3 years in the reserves. at 27 he should be ready for a spot on the subs bench. by 31 i'm sure he will be a regular

  2. 15th in the league, six wins all season and two points from the last 21 at home, and we have a "brilliant" striker who can't get a game. Call me naive, but I'm suspecting a touch of mismanagement somewhere.

  4. If he's that good play him, he wouldn't need to do much to better the players that are being picked, all of these so called brilliant youths which Villa are supposed to have don't seem to be materialising do they? where are our Rodwells,Willshires and the like?

  7. Well, if memory serves Weimann should be 20/21 by now?

Surely it's about time that he gets into the 1st team should he possess the skills necessary.

I know 20/21 is NO age in football, but Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott etc. all played 1st team from 16 onwards.
