We must learn lessons - Vermaelen

Thu, 16 Feb 15:23:29 2012

Defender Thomas Vermaelen has urged Arsenal to put their San Siro nightmare behind them if they are to get the season back on track with FA Cup victory at Sunderland.

The Gunners were thumped 4-0 by a well-drilled AC Milan side in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie which all but put paid to any hopes of progress.

Manager Arsene Wenger has challenged his team to regroup and deliver a performance when they head back to the Stadium of Light for Saturday's late kick-off a week after their 2-1 win lifted them into the top four of the Barclays Premier League.

A place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - which is now the only trophy Arsenal have a realistic chance of winning - would certainly be a welcome tonic and renew belief.

"When you are a professional you put the bad things that happen behind you," Vermaelen said.

"We will have to learn our lessons from what happened in Milan but it is important at times like this to remain mentally strong and focus on the next game."

  2. If we learned from every mistake we make then we wouldn't keep making the same mistakes, but we do.
This means we don't learn from our mistakes which tells me they don't have the ability to build on performances like the Milan one!

3 or 4 years ago we had at least 4 players who could walk in to any side in the world but at the moment we only have RVP and based on our performances of late that's exactly what he will do.

I just hope they use the money we get for him better then they did with the Cesc and Nasri money.

Arsen better start looking for two new forwards as we wont have no one except Gervinho left as the rest just have to go.

  5. I wish we only had as many problems as Arsenal........... must be tough.....champions league , Van Persie . Thierry Henry
etc etc.......you have no divine right to be winning!
the fact is you dont get decisions like you do in the Premier....
easy free kicks, penalties not given against you , no bookings..........same old story for Arsenal and Man utd.
The refs aren't paid off in Europe!
You were no great shakes at the SOL last week and it will be close this time around....

  8. Thomas Varmaelen, how many times have we heard that before ? You are ok but, your team mates are averge espacially that name sake of yours Thamas Rosicky who passed side ways not a successfull foward pass last night and yet they give him the ball all the time. Arteta is average, Ramsey is inconsistent, Arshavin not performing. Chamak goal shy, Gervinho loses the ball all the time, just another sprinter like walcott. The only breayh of fresh air is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. In short the team is s...t.

  9. Given the decline since the departure of David Dein, there is not much hope for Arsenal now. Arsenal are now mid table candidates & cannot hope to challenge for top honours.

The MIDFIELD is lacklustre with journeymen players

The DEFENCE may be OK according to Wenger standards, but the defence is POOR by anyone else's standards. Gooners can forget singing 1 nil to the Arsenal. No chance now of the Arsenal defence locking out an opponent after 1 score.

The ATTACK, well may be able to comment if the attack got any service.

Good luck to the Arsenal, now a mediocre club whose sponsors will be looking to move on & supporters have already stopped frequenting the Emirates stadium!
