Mark Stimson held his hands firmly in the air after his Gillingham side were taken to the cleaners in a 3-0 defeat to relegation rivals Crewe. The Gills were second best from the word go and left the field to a chorus of boos - with Kevin Maher sent off on his home debut.
"I take full responsibility for this defeat," said Stimson.
"I thought the reaction to the chairman at the end of the game was harsh - the reaction should be towards me.
"I wanted three points from this - or at least one. We weren't expecting that at all. It was a very bad day but we have to put this to bed.
"Now we have to get four points from the next two - Bournemouth next week is a must-win because we desperately want to stay in this division."
