1996: Mike Tyson knocks out Frank Bruno - again! - March 16
In his last ever fight Frank Bruno finally entered the ring as a World Champion for the first time but he was quickly dispatched by Tyson in the 3rd round of their rematch at the MGN Grand. This was only Tyson's third fight since being released from prison but he was still too strong for Britain's favourite boxing son as he stopped Bruno in the third round. When the two first met in 1989, Tyson had won in five but on that occasion Bruno at least hurt the American on a few occasions. However, the rematch was a one-sided contest and after the fight Bruno would say about Tyson: "they can say he is over the hill, but he will always have dynamite in both hands. They are nuclear-powered. He is a dangerous dude and he always will be."
1995: Michael Jordan announces "I'm back" - March 18.
Never has a two-worded press release caused such excitement. It was on this week back in 1995 that Michael Jordan simply informed the press in a statement "I'm back." The greatest basketball player of all retired in 1993 after leading the Chicago Bulls to three championships. 18 months later the Bulls really needed him as they were struggling to reach the playoffs. However, Jordan's return changed everything and he helped them make the Eastern Conference semi-finals before they lost to the Orlando Magic. Things really then took off the following season with Jordan inspiring the Bulls to another title. Chicago would go on to "three-peat" again and after picking up those three more rings Jordan would retire again. There would be another less successful comeback by Jordan, this time with the Washington Wizards, before "his Airness" finally called it quits for good in 2003.
1984: Boat race halted before starting - March 17
Ahh don't you just love the boat race? A bunch rowers train like crazy all year for the right to race in front of a bunch of pissed students who pay little or no attention to the race. There was all sorts of drama before the race even started on this week back in 1984 when the Cambridge boat ran headlong into a large moored barge that was being used by umpires in the middle of the river. The bow section of the vessel was shattered and the race had to be postponed a day. Oxford went on to win the following day by completing the course from Putney Bridge to Mortlake in 16 minutes and 45 seconds.
1966: The World Cup is stolen - March 20
Oh no! It is 1966 and the World Cup is stolen just a week after Brazil had handed it over to England to mind before the summer tournament! The trophy was snatched while on exhibition at Central Hall in Westminster and Brazil were understandably furious. They stated that such an event would never happen in their country where even the thieves love their football too much. Never fear though, as everybody now knows, Pickles the dog came to the rescue a week later and all was well with the world again. Brazil were then allowed to keep Jules Rimet Trophy after winning it for a third time back in 1970. In 1983 it was stolen in Rio - it has never been recovered.
1877: Australia beat England by 45 runs in very 1st Test match - March 19
The very first Test match was completed on this week in Melbourne back in 1877 with Australia beating England by 45 runs. Ironically, when the two sides met in 1977 for the centenary Test match Australia won by exactly the same margin. The key innings in the first ever Test came from Kent born Australian opener Charles Bannerman who scored 165 before having to retire hurt.
