McCulloch: Rangers Still Firing

Fri 16 May, 07:09 AM

Rangers may have fallen at the final hurdle in the UEFA Cup - but Lee McCulloch insists they still have plenty left in the tank to clinch a domestic treble.

Dreams of a first European trophy in 36 years ended in tears for Walter Smith's men when Zenit St Petersburg ran out 2-0 winners at the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday.

It had been Rangers' 19th continental outing of what has been a gruelling season both home and abroad and they must now dig deep again for four games in a seven-day spell which will ultimately determine just how much of a success this incredible campaign will be.

Motherwell are first up in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League before two more away matches at St Mirren and Aberdeen in a bid to wrest the title from Celtic's grasp. Then follows the Scottish Cup final against First Division Queen of the South.

Asked whether Rangers have enough left in reserve following the physical and mental drain of the UEFA Cup final, McCulloch replied with an emphatic "Definitely."

He said: "We have people who have been out injured coming back and we have a big squad. Saturday is the big game - if we win it puts us in a great position.

"We won't be feeling sorry for ourselves. We have done well in getting to the final but the main thing is that there are still two medals to play for and we won't let it affect us."

McCulloch claims every single Rangers player is now determined to avoid the same crushing disappointment they experienced in Manchester as they race towards the climax of the domestic campaign.

"It would be brilliant to win the treble," he said.

"That was the first thing everyone said when we got into the dressing room, that there were still two medals up for grabs in the last week of the season.

"We were disappointed on Wednesday night but hopefully we will be back for Saturday."

McCulloch made his return from injury against Zenit after fears he would be out for the season with a foot injury sustained at Celtic Park on April 16.

He is now hoping to have a part to play in the remaining games.

"I hope I'll be fresh but the other side is that I don't have my match fitness so it's going to be hard but I'm going to keep working hard in training and hopefully get some game time," he said.

McCulloch, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Wednesday night, played just 10 minutes of the defeat to Zenit but had no complaints about starting the final on the bench.

He said: "I always wanted to start but I haven't played since the injury so I couldn't expect to start. I don't think I could have.

"It's all about the game on Saturday and, if I play, I'll do my best."
