Int Football - Walcott, Huddlestone impress in win

First-half goals from senior-squad-members Tom Huddlestone and Theo Walcott were enough to see England U21s to a 2-0 victory over Wales U21 at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.

Huddlestone scored an 18th-minute penalty six-minutes before Walcott's shot deflected off Lewis Nyatanga to double England's lead, which Wales never really threatened to recover.

The two goalscorers were among the five players from Fabio Capello's senior squad included by Stuart Pearce, the Italian coach in the stands to watch the comfortable win.

Wales had the first chance of the match when the impressive Ched Evans got around the back of the England defence before crossing low to Sam Vokes, although his shot was saved point-blank by Joe Hart and the rebound bundled wide.

England took the lead with a 19th minute penalty from Huddlestone after Adam Johnson had been brought down by Neal Eardley just inside the box after cutting inside from the left wing.

Walcott doubled the lead just six minutes later when he took a short free-kick before moving across the edge of the area, his shot into the crowded box deflected past Wayne Hennessey off the body of the unfortunate Lewis Nyatanga.

Wales responded well though and almost pulled a goal back just after the half-hour when Andrew Taylor almost sliced an attempted clearance into his own net, the ball looping over Hart and coming back off the crossbar.

Vokes brought another save out of Hart as he held off his marker, running down the right channel, and the Bournmouth striker might have done better with a free header before half-time.

England, without rested captain David Wheater and Hart in the second period, took further control of the game after the break, with most of the play in the Wales half and Walcott looking increasingly dangerous as the space opened up.

However, the game became more disjointed as both managers made a raft of substitutions in the latter stages, and neither side were able to forge any real chances to extend the scoring.
