Darren Purse has agreed a two-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday following his release from Cardiff.
The experienced centre-back was out of contract in the Welsh capital at the end of this season and was deemed surplus to requirements by Bluebirds boss Dave Jones as he completed a summer clear-out last week.
But Owls boss Brian Laws has wasted no time in snapping up the 32-year-old and he will finalise the agreement when the Wednesday squad report back for pre-season training on July 1.
Laws said: "My main priority this summer is to sign players with quality and experience. In Darren Purse we have secured the services of someone with both of those qualities in abundance."
He added: "He has experience of getting promoted from this division and of playing at the very top level but most importantly he is a leader on the pitch."
Laws added: "The improved budget I have been provided this year has enabled me to make some positive movements in the transfer market already and I am confident of making one or two more additions in the not too distant future."

isowall. but Purse left cardiff because he wanted to play every week, but Cardiff know hes not good enough anymore to play every week.He will not be a happy bunny sitting on a bench in Sheffield.
Good points... however I refer that Purse will be a good signing notso much on the pitch but off it to help the two best young centre backs in the division Mr Beevers and Wood develop fully into the real deal, I doubt Laws would break up that combination unless he really had to.
Agreed .. Wednesday will be lucky to get promotion next season and if they did by whatever method they would probably endure the same fate as WBA did this season so one step forward would be three back.
I refered to Luton because Wednesday have managed their £20M+ debt ov, er a number of bleak seasons, where as clubs with smaller infra structures would have gone into Administration and dropped like a stone. Just look at Southampton - I'd still like to bet that Wednesday will reach the Premiership before Cardiff. They are a massive club, bigger than Cardiff can ever dream to be and given the right investment a club with a future.
isowall. Not sure what the ref to luton is about??? makes no sense to me. I have not knocked wednesday i was replying to the guy who said he was taking a cardiff reject to big club like wednesday. Its not accurate that this season you did not do better than cardiff... its a fact ....why do you refer to one game....thats the problem with wednesday ,you are looking at things in isolation rather than the the season and more importantly where you stand in football rankings. Both Cardiff and Wednesday will always be Championship sides at best. As for Purse he is finshed at this level. He has no pace and makes some really bad mistakes. He has been great for us but it was time to go. You will not get into the prem with this sort of signing fact...thats the point i was trying to make.....Purse v great signing v ambition does not make sense.you should be outraged rather than glad. you are settling for mid table again.
Good shrewd signing and I think Laws will have a few more up his sleeve this summer should his budget be confirmed.
Don't knock Wednesday Andrew, if Cardiff had been in the same position they may well be in the same boat as Luton. Just remember you have Ridsdale as Chairman and look what happened to Leeds and on the last dy of the season I think they managed rather well against the Bluebirds - have another nice year in the Championship, like the rest of us.

No 1. purse is a good pro but not at championship level any longer. Everyone wishes him well at mid table Wednesday. One thing is for certain cardiff will never take a wednesday player again after we had steve mclean. if thats the best wednesday could offer its no wonder they will stay in the mediocrity of mid table or occasional visits to div 1. PS dont dis teams that finish above you in the league it makes you look bitter and twisted.
Shrewd signing.
KRO
woods and beever are good young defenders but someone like purse can show them a few tricks of the trade.something hes probably aware of when signing
A very good player of his type and I wish him well with Wednesday.Needs regular first team football and would'nt be guaranteed that at cardiff as the other central defenders have improved past him(to use horse racing parlance).
Not sure if a Cardiff reject is good enough to play for a mighty club like Sheffield Wednesday. Time will tell, and anyone who puts the famous blue and white shirt will be made most welcome at fortress Hillsborough. At least Purse will better is career. Good luck Darren.
