Portsmouth have admitted big-name players may have to be sold this summer whether or not the club remains in the Premier League for a seventh successive season.
Pompey's executive chairman Peter Storrie says their uncertain future hinges on the ownership issue - with current supremo Alexandre Gaydamak having made it clear he wants to sell and will no longer invest.
With the club reportedly £65million in debt and due to pay off a large chunk of that to a South African bank at the end of the season, Storrie admits: "I'd like to keep all our good players but a lot depends on the ownership issue."
He added: "We can bring in a new owner but it has to be one who can put finance in because that's what is required for the club to go forward again.
"At this moment in time what happens in the transfer market depends entirely on the ownership of the club.
"Sacha (Gaydamak) has made it perfectly clear that although he's done some fantastic things in the past he cannot now put in any more finance.
"At the moment various discussions are happening on that and I'm hopeful something will happen sooner rather than later."
Meanwhile, caretaker-manager Paul Hart has a clean bill of health - apart from injured Kranjcar - from which to choose his team to face fellow strugglers Sunderland on Monday and will be odds-on to keep the job with a new contract for next season should he keep Pompey in the top-flight.
But he could soon be plunged into major negotiations with no fewer than 15 players out of contract this summer including skipper Sol Campbell, 34,  Pompey's top earner.

Lets be honest people, we have been supposed whipping boys for years, yet we always managed to step up when the fight was on. Nobody likes comming here because we are rough and ready. I have had more heart and lung busting times at the park which I will never forget. I was there in the 4th with Frank Burrows and will always be there regardless because its our club. So let the super stars leave and the fickle fans can stay at home because we only want true blue believers who will get behind the team. Stop listening to the press. We are Portsmouth FC we are here, we are waiting and provided they do their best than that will do me!!
Depends on who comes up,and how well they settle to premier league, look at this season looks like Baggies , Tango man + Pinnochio will be returning, history speaks for itself, in the past I can't think of one season when there is not an automatic relegation or two.
Is Topny Adams still the manager?
HaHaHa, Skates going bust
pompey will be ok i say get rid of the big name players and money earners as they have done nothing this season , i rather have players who want to play for pompey,,, and next season we will be ok some not good pompey fans here ,, plastic comes to mind ,,,, up or down u support the team what ever league its still your team greedy players will come and go but the true fan stays as they our the loyal fans of football ,,,,players should take a leaf from the fan ,,,,,, but they our greedy and spoilt ,,,, pompey forever ,,,,,
Pompey may see big-name exits ??
big-name exits ?
Who are the big names?
Port is in 15th place...
how "big" are the big names if they can't keep their team in the top half of the table !
Will Crouch come back to the Mighty Reds?Does he still have that Mighty Reds stamina? How much for free will he be back? All these questions needs(have) limited answers
We may stay up this season but we will be canon fodder next with no depth in squad and no quality in the team. Relegation certainties.
I just hope we get a buyer who wants to invest..and quickly.
