Premier League - Transfer Talk: Bentley Continental

Eurosport - Mon, 16 Jun 22:11:00 2008

David Bentley says he wants out of Blackburn, and Transfer Talk can't help but wonder whether that has anything to do with claims that Steve McClaren is in town for a job interview.

2008 England David Bentley - 0

The fella with the umbrella gave Bentley his England debut last September, but then shelved him for the crunch qualifiers against Russia and Croatia.

Also, McClaren couldn't command less dressing room respect if he came into work wearing just his y-fronts and called himself Christian Gross.

"I want to move on," bleated Bentley. "I want to be playing Champions League football. I want to be playing in Europe."

It could mean a shock switch to Beitar Jerusalem, but Bentley would probably prefer Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester United.

As for moneybags Manchester City? Well, £100,000 a week would probably make him forget he's in the UEFA Cup.

Big Phil Scolari has admitted he was lured to Chelsea by a trail of £50 notes, but David Villa refuses to fall for the same trick.

"Money means nothing," he meditated, crossing his legs and donning an orange robe. "If you are not happy then material things mean nothing."

"Do not speak - unless it improves on silence," he didn't add.

Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola used to play with Hristo Stoichkov, who used to be Dimitar Berbatov's Bulgaria manager.

That is the Chinese whisper of a logical leap used to claim that the Spurs man will be lacing up his boots at the Camp Nou in a couple of weeks. £25m is his price tag.

Aston Villa, it seems, have shelved plans to give Gareth Barry a testimonial, which could mean they are preparing to hand him a number two in a box by way of a parting gift when he leaves for Liverpool.

'Jose Mourinho's Inter' want Robin van Persie, who publicly slagged off the paltry wages on offer at Arsenal.

If he goes, the Gunners will replace him with £8m Bafetimbi Gomis, the St Etienne striker who stowed himself away on the French bus to Euro 2008.

For reasons passing understanding, Roma and Bordeaux both want Manchester United misfit Mikael Silvestre.

Roma will pay £2.5m while Bordeaux would prefer a season-long loan. You get the feeling United will happily rid themselves of him by any means necessary.

Euro 2008 might be showing up as hogwash the claim that England is the centre of the football universe, but Stelios Giannakopoulos fancies another stint in the Premier League.

Why? "Because it is the best in the world. Simple as."

Transfer Talk likes a man with principles; somebody who will stick his neck out whatever the consequences.

So hats off to James Harper, who has the gumption to declare: "I won't pretend I don't want to play in the Premier League." You tell 'em.

West Ham, Fulham and Bolton are all after the £3m-rated Reading midfielder, it would seem.

Ho ho ho! Bet John Mensah has a high IQ! Transfer Talk is already fed up to the back teeth with the Rennes centre-back, who tickles the fancy of Wigan, Blackburn, Portsmouth and West Ham.

How Hull City's £2m bid for Plymouth winger Peter Halmosi can be described as "shock" is anyone's guess. Still, that's the Mirror's highly excitable take on the move.

Last and least, Fabrice Muamba is set to complete his move from Birmingham to Bolton.

  5. This appears to be a Bentley bashing blog (quite rightly). If he is concerned about the direction of Blackburn without Mark Hughes then he should wait and see who Blackburn hires, and I do think its going to be BIG SAM, which is a positve move for Balckburn. And as for Bentley's aspiration of playing CL football next season....PUHLEEZE what a gommie. First of all, at Liverpuke, Manure, Arse-anal, and Chelski he will be just another bench warmer (was this not the reason why he left Arsenal in the first place?). Bentley would do better at clubs like Everton, Spurs, and Villa who have fulltime needs for his services. However, I think his real motives for asking to move would be to join his former boss Mark Hughes at Manshitty playing alongside the likes of let me party Ronaldin-whore.

  6. I'm not sure about Bentley. I think he is a trouble causer and a money grabber. I think Liverpool should look to get a more world class player. Lets face it Ash Young was higher in the assist chart last year than Bentley.

  7. liverpool have 3 big money options being, Villa, Barry, and Bentley and all would be great acquisitions. However i think it is obvious we wont be spending 60+ million on players judging by the attitudes of the owners. For this reason although we need them all to have a shot of winning the title i think we should just be going for Barry and Bentley. Our weakest prt of the pitch is the wing so Bentley for that reason. Barry plays well with gerrard and will replace alonso, both players are also english so would suit the new FIFA regulations about foreign players if it is ever accpeted. Although Villa is a great buy for anybody especially a team with torres, he would be about 30 million and after 26 on Fernando i dont see that happening. As long as we get a good winger and Barry we can take atleast 3rd spot in the league.

  8. Gareth Barry should think obout the "Rotation System" Rafa uses at Liverpool before joining, would he be happy sitting on the bench untill he came on ?Ithink not,and Villa have a better Manager and I think will finish in the top 4 next season, and their side was a true revelation last season.Look before you leap Gareth.D R

  10. I think Bentley will be good in the Liverpool squad but I'm not too sure about Barry... I think we should defenatley go for David Villa, him and Torres woiuld make a great partenership...!!

do we want all of these amazing foriegn players in our country?

  12. liverpool need to sign a top striker to play with F.Torres and D.villa is playing beautifully well with him for spain so why dont liverpool forget about Barry and go after villa??

From colinsbell, on Mon 16 Jun 5:00PM
  13. if i was david villa i would consider arsenal, i think he needs a quick player whose good in the air like torres, if hes not going to link up with him at pool then adebayor at arsenal would be a good partnership.

  14. what about huntelaar, or luis fabiano? both would be much cheaper than villa

  16. you cant afford him though!

  17. I agree with johnewen1, we do need a real out and out goal scorer. We relied to much on Ronaldo in the last two seasons. Saha may go, hes always injured, pitty he was a good player. Villa would do well at utd... Hesselink isn't good enough though

From kevinbail, on Mon 16 Jun 3:37PM
  18. I would like Man Utd to sign a predatory striker. Not someone to help set up more. Rooney and Tevez don't score often enough. We need someone like Ruud was. A target man. Hesselink of Celtic perhaps? He would be a cheap buy.
