Top 14 - Clermont secure top spot

Clermont finished top of the Top 14 regular season after thumping strugglers Dax 95-7 on Saturday.

The victory earned Clermont a home semi-final against Perpignan, who were unable to steal third-spot from Stade Francais despite downing the Parisians 23-19.

A bonus point for losing by less than seven points was enough for Stade to grab third place.

Clermont ran in no fewer than 14 tries against relegated Dax to stay ahead of second-placed Toulouse, who overcame Bayonne 35-28.

Toulouse will now host Stade Francais on Saturday, the day after Perpignan travel to Clermont.

Castres defeated Biarritz on the road 34-30 to finish fifth, and despite the defeat their Atlantic coast opponents secured ta Heineken Cup spot for next season after finishing sixth.

The seventh and final Heineken Cup place went to Montauban, who struggled past Albi 24-17.

Also relegated were basement club Auch.

  1. Clermont play Perpignan in Marseille's Velodrome and Toulouse play Paris in Bordeaux.

    How can these be regarded as home fixtures for the clubs mentioned. Marseille is about 3 hours from Perpignan and 5 from Clermont. Bordeaux is about an hour closer to Toulouse than Paris.
