Championship - Watford always wanted Mackay

Eurosport - Tue, 16 Jun 16:17:00 2009

Watford have revealed they had long earmarked Malky Mackay as a future manager even though his appointment came earlier than expected.

FOOTBALL Watford Mackay - 0

Former Hornets defender Mackay had a spell in caretaker charge prior to Brendan Rodgers taking over and has now been given the top job at Vicarage Road, after the ex-Chelsea reserves boss switched to Reading.

"He had already been identified as a potential successor and as such was in pole position for the role," said chief executive officer Julian Winter.

"I don't think anybody expected Brendan to leave so soon, however that is why we have these plans in place.

"We believe Malky has all the credentials to move us forward and stamp his authority on the team.

"Malky did tremendously well to stabilise the club back in November during his role as caretaker manager and he showed plenty of first-class managerial qualities during that period too."
