Confederations Cup - Last-gasp Brazil break Egypt

Eurosport - Tue, 16 Jun 11:16:00 2009

Kaka scored an injury-time penalty as Brazil survived a huge scare to beat Egypt 4-3 in a thrilling Group B clash at the Confederations Cup in Bloemfontein.

FOOTBALL Confederations Cup 2009 Brazil Juan - 0

The new Real Madrid star placed the ball low to the right of Essam Al-Hadari after substitute Ahmed Al-Muhammadi deliberately handballed Lucio's shot on the line in the final minute of play.

The 2006 and 2008 African champions had staged a remarkable fightback, scoring twice in two second-half minutes to level the game at 3-3.

Kaka had given Brazil a fifth-minute lead with the first of two goals after Wael Goma'a kicked air while trying to clear.

Mohamed Zidan levelled soon afterwards with a power header from a pin-point Mohamed Aboutreika cross, but Brazil cruised to a 3-1 half-time lead thanks to headed goals from set-pieces by Luis Fabiano and Juan.

But a superb second-half performance from the Pharoahs saw them dominate Brazil both with and without the ball.

The introduction of playmaker Ahmed Eid put Brazil further on the back foot and, after a flowing passing move, Middlesbrough outcast Mohamed Shawky's cracking long-range drive zipped into the bottom left for 3-2 on 53 minutes.

That strike was swiftly followed by an Aboutreika-assisted breakaway goal by Dortmund's Zidan that saw Egypt draw level.

The Ahly star wriggled past two Brazil defenders before sliding a through ball that Zidan raced on to before hammering a left-foot drive past Julio Cesar.

Another sub, Al-Muhamaddi, also impressed wide right as Egypt over-ran Brazil while trying to find a fourth.

However, it was the ENPPI winger's deliberate handball on the goal-line after Lucio met a free-kick that led to a red card and Kaka's 91st-minute winner.

Eid almost grabbed a dramatic late equaliser when his long-range shot was spilled by Cesar, but no-one was on hand to finish and Brazil completed a fortunate win.

The USA face Italy in the second clash of the group this evening.

  5. I thought the hand ball was intentional. It looked like he was trying to block it with his chest at first but then realized it was going in and stuck his arm out. Definitely worthy of a straight red. But what was worse was his play acting afterwards like he got hurt. That was terrible and really low class. And the Brazilians, who are diving experts, saw it all the way. Still, a fantasic match, one of the best in the past couple of years.

  7. Great match - unlucky hand ball which was NOT deliberate, he was off balance trying to get to the ball and it flew at him. Bad luck and I would have been delighted if it had been a drawe. Egypt amazingly outclassed the boys from Brazil for much of the 2nd half. England better watch out if they come up against Egypt.

  8. Thanks, be cool...I think you are right here. It was a bit of mess with the refs towards the end but I just don't want Egypt to have a bad image because of the appeal, because the penalty, in the end, was the right call. Imagine if did end up a corner kick, then Brazil would be appealing which would have been worse. Regardless, I also think it was one of the most entertaining international matches I've watched in a very long, probably since the last World Cup and I was very impressed with Egypt's performance, truly world class football.

  9. First of all in responding to Mark V , ..Mark ..Egypt made an appeal not because the penalety was not right ...but because The first refree judge..first he said the ball was a corner kick then the fourth refree told him it was a penalety ..as some external person (not one of the refrees) saw the play through the monitor and told the fourth refree so the fourth refree on his behalf told the first refree ...they are sending an appeal because you cant just say it was a corner kick then says its a penalety and give a red card . , Ofcourse we are not saying that you can cheat as long as you wont get caught ...but we are just criticizing the first refree hesitation in such a critical situation....but I myself Think it was one of the greatest matches I have seen in quite a while ....GO Pharohs =)

  10. What a game and congratulations to Egypt for a well played match. I think they have earned the respect of pundits and neutrals as THE football power in Africa. But I don't understand the point of Egypt lodging an appeal when they themselves admit that it was a penalty. And they were very fortunate they didn't get a straight red card. I'm affraid that this appeal will only tarnish Egypt's football image. What are they trying to achieve and what message are they sending with this appeal? That cheating is ok as long as you don't get caught by the proper rules? It's an insult to fair play. I wish they hadn't appealled because now that's what people will be focusing on, including me.
