Transfers - Your view: Villa the man for United?

Eurosport - Tue, 16 Jun 10:28:00 2009

Amid reports that Manchester United have turned their attentions to David Villa, we ask whether the Valencia striker is the right man for the Premier League champions.

FOOTBALL 2009 - David Villa, Spain - 0

Reports have suggested the Spain hitman would set United back £45m, but is he worth that kind of money?

Alex Ferguson will have £80m to spend once Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Real Madrid is completed so perhaps the money becomes a side issue.

But would Villa actually thrive with United in the Premier League? His compatriot Fernando Torres made a seamless switch from La Liga to the English top flight, but Villa is a different player altogether.

Like Torres, he is a born finisher, but with a slighter stature, is he as well equipped for the rigours of the Premier League as the Liverpool ace?

What do you think? Have your say below or on the message boards, via the link underneath the photo!

Here's what you have been saying already:

zitrostars0920: "Get rid of Berba, keep Tevez, and sign Villa. Give Nani and Anderson more playing time so they can develop. We need more attacking football please. Ribery, maybe, but not for the asking price!"

pkw.wilson: "Villa is a great striker, but Torres is leagues ahead of him. Two weeks ago there's no way he would have cost £45 million."

makjun: "Why would he want to leave Spain when in fact all top five players in the world will play in La Liga next season? What is there left in the Premier League which has lost its shine?"

Dark.Soul: "It's at least 15 million too much. He wants to go to another club in Spain. I don't see it happening unless David Gill pulls off some kinda magic. I would prefer Torres though but it would take more than a miracle for him to come to United."

craig.hoy: "Villa to United? A disaster waiting to happen! The guy gets homesick when Valencia play away in Madrid! Manchester would be like moving to an alien planet. He would be another Veron. He's better going to Barca and United saving the cash."

Gainsy: "Did no one read David Villa's interview a few weeks ago when he said he had no intention of playing in England ever and was only looking to play in Spain, it's about time the press got over this one, it ain't going to happen!!! Nor is the Ribery one, he don't like the weather!!! Shame as it's a lovely day in England today."

  4. Forget Villa, Silva, Ribery and Benzema check out Gremio player Douglas Costa 18 years old and full of potential. I really do not see the point of buying those players for more than £30 million they will demand in 3 years time to leave when a club with warmer climate comes crawling e.g Real Madrid. At least with Costa if he is as good as i think he is we could have him for 6 to 7 years and his wages will not be astronomical like the above. I believe we have Macheda, Welbeck, Anderson, Nani, The Twins, Rooney who can more than match any team. If we do bring Valencia and Costa we will get there. Look who replaced Beckham when we thought he was irreplaceable a teenage boy that many of us did not know about Ronaldo. A new number 7 will emerge even better not at first but with time which i believe will be Costa or an unknown player.

  9. It pains me to say it but SAF will not be able to attract any world class strikers to Man U, until he can provide them with the service that only world class midfielders can supply. Put simply, we do not have that class of midfielder and that was evident in the game against Barca.

  10. POTENTIALS. That's what we fans have been hearing in the last couple of days. We are losing players for real so we should either buy or come out and say we are satisfied with what we have left. Football is not played by potentials. Personally i think if we use the youngsters at our disposal they will come good. We should not be under pressure to win more trophies immediately as the last few years have been quite good. There's time to build before asserting such authorities. Some might argue though that we need to prove that ManU can do well without CR7 and that makes sense too.

  12. just read that spanish players are good enough for the premiership?.
sorry i don`t know if it`s me but, pepe reina has won the golden glove for 3 of the 4 seasons (with the most clean sheets) that`s ahead of man utd`s great defence and keeper.
torres 50 goals in 2 seasons. (enough said)
xabi alonso - do i really have to explain if he`s a great player or not.
fabregas - arsenal`s best player and a quality midfielder.
arbeloa and riera are`nt the greatest of spanish players, but until they came the prem they weren`t internationals.
some of these players were`nt world renowned top players, untill they came to the prem. and now all the top side in the world are after them.

  13. Villa said on several occasions that he would prefer to stay in Spain and he would NOT move to the EPL . Just accept it and move on !!

From Tim, on Tue 16 Jun 10:54AM
  14. Ribery, Benzema, Villa, Silva can go take a hike they would be a disaster waiting to happen it pains me to say this but players like these if they did come as soon as a Spanish(Real Madrid, Barcelona) team comes in for them they will be M I A as MU is not the dream team for them. Plus they cost to much especially Ribery i know he is a good player but he is not in the top ten. Personally i would like to see a young english player with potential to be bought in at least they will be more loyal to the team. Foreign players are different because as a youngster they would of had dreams of the team they would love to go to play for and most of those teams are not in England. There's no point paying over the odds for who may want to leave in the next to years for their value to go down dramatically. Personally if all those players do not come i will be happy the only player i would like to see at MU is Valencia i know he is not as great the above but let SAF get his hand on him and he will mould him into a great footballer just like Ronaldo is give him time.

From jaytayo, on Tue 16 Jun 10:47AM
  15. I think all of Man Utd's attacking forwards and midfielders, Berbatov, Nani, Rooney, Macheda, Wellbeck, Tosic, Park, Anderson, Fletcher, Carrick etc will have a better season without living in Ronaldo's shadow. I recon they will be tighter as a team. Add to that a new goal scorer, hopefully Benzema or Villa, I can see Man Utd having a better season than last year. They started pretty poorly, took only four points from their main rivals yet still were champions.

  16. MAN UTD GAT LOT MONEY FOR SIGNING ANY PLAYER THIS SUMMER,SO VILLA,VALENCIA,ETOO,BENZEMA,RIBERY AND EVEN THE SPAIN MAN TORESS CAN MOVE TO MAN UTD AT ANY TIME,MAN UTD Z DAMN HIGH MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN

From GOODLUCK S, on Tue 16 Jun 8:23AM
  17. villa is another big name. but the quality of spanish players may not suit EPL qualities. his compatriot like fernando torres, arbeloa, jose antonio reyes, and pique are all struggling to shine in epl. of course torres is a scoring players but he has won zero for liverpool.

the fact that villa man for united is unpredicatble. but, qualities is always qualities. fergie may have the power to shine new players that comes to EPL. it will be a great things to see rooney, tevez, berbatov, and villa to play at united. however, united tactics would be the problems as they are stars and need to play.

anything could be happen here in united i believe. ronaldo's departure will give a green light for some big name players like ribery, villa, david silva, valencia, and eto'o. these man would eager to take ronaldo's position as no. 7 jersey.

  19. Liverpool don't have the money to be buying this year, yes there are an estimated 5 people leaving them this summer but this is only for the money, the signing of Torres left them in debt as they needed to take out a loan to afford him, and also with building a new stadium thing are looking pretty gloom for Liverpool and in my opinion they will fall away next season, definitely not title contenders, so to will Arsenal and Villa will definitely finish top 4 next season, Chelsea to win, although it would be that extra bit special for united to win after the goings on of this summer and the doubts surrounding the club so watch out for them aswell!
