Transfers - Your view: Villa the man for United?

Eurosport - Tue, 16 Jun 10:28:00 2009

Amid reports that Manchester United have turned their attentions to David Villa, we ask whether the Valencia striker is the right man for the Premier League champions.

FOOTBALL 2009 - David Villa, Spain - 0

Reports have suggested the Spain hitman would set United back £45m, but is he worth that kind of money?

Alex Ferguson will have £80m to spend once Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Real Madrid is completed so perhaps the money becomes a side issue.

But would Villa actually thrive with United in the Premier League? His compatriot Fernando Torres made a seamless switch from La Liga to the English top flight, but Villa is a different player altogether.

Like Torres, he is a born finisher, but with a slighter stature, is he as well equipped for the rigours of the Premier League as the Liverpool ace?

What do you think? Have your say below or on the message boards, via the link underneath the photo!

Here's what you have been saying already:

zitrostars0920: "Get rid of Berba, keep Tevez, and sign Villa. Give Nani and Anderson more playing time so they can develop. We need more attacking football please. Ribery, maybe, but not for the asking price!"

pkw.wilson: "Villa is a great striker, but Torres is leagues ahead of him. Two weeks ago there's no way he would have cost £45 million."

makjun: "Why would he want to leave Spain when in fact all top five players in the world will play in La Liga next season? What is there left in the Premier League which has lost its shine?"

Dark.Soul: "It's at least 15 million too much. He wants to go to another club in Spain. I don't see it happening unless David Gill pulls off some kinda magic. I would prefer Torres though but it would take more than a miracle for him to come to United."

craig.hoy: "Villa to United? A disaster waiting to happen! The guy gets homesick when Valencia play away in Madrid! Manchester would be like moving to an alien planet. He would be another Veron. He's better going to Barca and United saving the cash."

Gainsy: "Did no one read David Villa's interview a few weeks ago when he said he had no intention of playing in England ever and was only looking to play in Spain, it's about time the press got over this one, it ain't going to happen!!! Nor is the Ribery one, he don't like the weather!!! Shame as it's a lovely day in England today."

  3. David Villa, Valencia striker is the best player for Man Utd. So, Sir Alex must sign him for Man Utd fans. He is the best replacement for Cristiano, who is left man utd. Sir Alex, please let to play Wayne Rooney in his natural role, lone striker. Come On David Villa For Red Devils. We will welcome Villa

  5. Transfer rumours are rarely generated by the clubs concerned, but more by the press to generate sales and the agents of players to either garner an improved contract from the current club or stimulate interest from new clubs.
I doubt Fergie was behind the Torres transfer rumour and probably not behind the Villa one either. Villa is a great player, but at 28 yrs old is not worth 45 million. Unfortunately, thanks to truly world class players now being priced at ridiculous sums of money, average players are now going for 10 - 15 million! It's all spiralling way out of control. Kaka and Ronaldo are no way worth such huge sums. Berbatov was never worth 30m. Robinho the same. No wonder the clubs are in such debt. Time to take a moral stand and just refuse to buy these over-priced Prima Donas.

  6. i'm all for buying Villa, i've been a great fan of his for a good few years and think he would make an excellent addition to the already fabulous united squad! :D

  11. united should buy villa and maybe sneak in a bid for torres in the january transfer window if things arent going as well as they would have hoped, i havent seen villa play apart from in euro 2008 and he was pretty good in that :)

i think we should buy him and see how things develop

  12. forget villa, benzema, and if tevez wont sign for the money we are offering so be it. there will be two new players back this season hargreaves and brown who are going to give us cover at the back and in midfield. berbatov does not become a bad player over night i expect him to shine this season. wellbeck, mancheda and manucho should be given the opportunities to develope. it may be the final season for giggs and scholes but from what we so from gibson and the emergence of fletcher as a class act plus anderson carrick park nani possebon we have strenth. their is only one ronaldo as there was only one roy keane or george best, cantona or law.

From STEVEN, on Mon 15 Jun 4:27PM
  13. he will be the man who united have been watin 4 david villa torres and rooney upfront unstoppable go on fergie sign em up

From micko, on Mon 15 Jun 4:25PM
  14. He is a brilliant player but united already have enough strikers. We need more quality in midfield.

  15. United are going to end up with egg on their faces again. No Ronaldo, no Tevez. Valencia, star of Wigan, Berbatov, the Invisible man, Scholes, Giggs and Neville, 'Last of the Summer Wine', Rooney doing 200% of everything, Nani and 'Hans Christian' Anderson, 'developing with age'. £80 and...and...and Ribery (Barcelona), Benzima (Milan) and...Et'oo Hmm! Ibrahimovitch £80M, bottles it in big games. Who ios going to join teams with financial problems?

  17. Villa is quality, no doubt about it. He will probably rock in the premier league. Well for a while at least. He is 28 in December and this is getting on a bit for a striker. You would imagine you will see the best of him this season, and maybe get 2-3 years out of him at the top level. Is this worth £45 million ? not in my opinion, but if you win every trophy with him then maybe. But at £45 million and 29 next year it could be an expensive mistake that you will not get back.

From TheFootballOracle, on Mon 15 Jun 4:09PM
  18. Villa is in my opinion the best striker in the world. He'll thrive wherever he goes!

From carlbravo, on Mon 15 Jun 4:00PM
  19. yes villa would look good in a man utd shirt rather than a madrid shirt he would do well at old trafford and score twice as many goals as ronaldo so COME ON VILLA come to united for £45mill NOW!!!

From TR, on Mon 15 Jun 3:51PM
  20. This is an awkward time for Valenica, with their financial difficulties, so I feel a great amount of sorrow for them. However, with Utd offering £45m for one player I think they will take the loss of a great striker and clear their debts. Hopefully he will sign for Utd as this will allow Rooney to play his natural role, just behind an out and out striker, and will also be a chance for him to learn how defenders in the epl improve. Best of luck Villa, hopefully you will find the right club to play for.
