Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is closing on his first transfer targets as he waits to see which of his players he can hold on to.
The former England defender has been back at work since last week after a short break and is starting to put his recruitment plans into action.
Southgate said: "I have players who have Premier League experience and who will obviously interest other clubs."
He continued: "There are those that we will have difficulty hanging on to and there are some who I am keen to ensure stay with us and who are fully committed to the challenge ahead.
"At the same time, we will have to replace those players who do leave."
Boro received little encouragement when they made an initial inquiry about Manchester United veterans Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, but have drawn up a list of potential targets. However, much could depend on exactly where the likes of Tuncay Sanli, Robert Huth and Gary O'Neil are playing their football next season - Stewart Downing's foot injury means he is unlikely to be sold - and the financial implications for the Teessiders.

boros new kit is the best for ages however it must be cheaper
Southgate may be a nobody but I like him, he is not arrogant and I personally think he did his best despite getting relagated! I hope Boro go up next season!
Boro will not come straight back up. With Southgates we are doing ok chat game after game as they lost he was a deluded fool. Downing was a five minute wonder on a good day usually hiding as Boro struggled. Any manager worth his salt would have cashed Downing in in the window and bought a striker and a playmaker something Boro did not have, They are not mentally tough enough to survive an increasingly competetive Championship .There are teams in there far better equipped than Boro to escape.
At least Gareth has some passion for the club. Same goes for Steve Gibson. Just hope some of the players decide to stay and help us win our place back in the Prem league. Come on Boro.
good luck, hope to see u back in the league next season
at least he is honest , good luck next season
Southgate will come good and we must get behind the team next season. We weren't that far off last season, we just need some experience and a goalscorer.
I would rather be in our shoes than the scumbags up the road. A clueless chairman a local hero who loves the club that much he wouldn't work for less than a 100 thousand a week, someone who cares for the club above hIs wallet I don't think so.
Give me Southgate anytime at least he is trying to jump ship like them up the road.
So he is still the coach? Great player, however he must work cheap.
