Manchester City manager Mark Hughes will switch his atttentions to other targets after missing out on signing Ronaldinho. The Brazilian star has agreed to join AC Milan from Barcelona, despite City offering a more lucrative deal.
Though Hughes is disappointed to lose out in the chase for Ronaldinho, he believes the bid to sign the playmaker is a sign of City's ambition.
"We have presented our case as well as we possibly could and the fact that we are in there trying to get one of the top players in the world shows our ambition and where we want to go," Hughes told the Manchester Evening News.
"I don't know the finer details of the negotiations, but the way the Ronaldinho deal was constructed was a little bit different by all accounts to an ordinary deal, so my budget would not have been affected as much as people think."
Hughes remains determined to improve his City squad before the start of the season and has identified several potential signings.
However, the former Blackburn Rovers boss will keep his targets under wraps to ensure City are not gazumped by another club.
He added: "There is plenty of speculation about which players we may or may not go for.
"Obviously, I am being linked with players that I know and possibly have worked with before and then there are others that agents are trying to move on and place.
"There is a lot of that going on at the moment. It is not my way to divulge who were are going after.
"I will keep them under wraps in case someone jumps in at the last moment, but there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes."

That's all they could do.
City can't offer him Euro football, the chance to play alongside the best players in the world, millions of adoring fans and the chance to add to his trophy collection.
All City could do was appeal to his greedy side.
All I can say is well done to the guy. Not many players choose football over money.
I don't know why Hughes is excited? They were never seriously going to get him.. in years to come, when you look back over Ronaldinho's career and see..
Gremio
PSG
Barcelona
Milan
... it looks a damned sight more impressive than...
Gremio
PSG
Barcelona
Man City
Just accept the fact that AC Milan is a more prestigious club than Man City. What player in their right mind would choose Man City over one of the top Italian teams? It beggars beleif that Hughes is actually shocked... Ronaldinho is a millionairre already so their plan of throwing loads of money at him was a bit silly.
