McGugan ready for the big kick-off

Wed 16 Jul, 04:03 PM

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis McGugan is keen to prove his worth this season and cement his place in Colin Calderwood's first-team plans. The 19-year-old burst onto the scene last season, making 35 league starts and, in the process, being tipped for a call-up to the England Under-21 scene as Forest claimed automatic promotion to the Championship.

But with a host of new signings, McGugan is keen to prove he can handle the heat in England's second tier.

"There's real competition for places," he told the club's official website. "Midfield is no exception, but I believe that will ultimately make me a better player.

"No-one is guaranteed a first-team spot and that's the way it should be - we're all looking to prove to the manager that we are worth a shirt.

"I want to cement a place for myself in the team and play as many games as possible."
