O'Neill Expects Reds Contact

Wed 16 Jul, 09:09 AM

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill expects Liverpool to come in with a new bid for Gareth Barry.

The Reds have thus far been frustrated in their attempts to sign Barry, with Villa reportedly looking for in the region of £18million for the England international.

Barry is set to return to pre-season training with Villa on Wednesday after being suspended for two weeks for his public outburst against O'Neill.

The Villa boss told Sky Sports News: "I haven't heard anymore.

"We should be in communication with Liverpool, but he is coming back (to training)."

Villa have been linked with a host of players in recent weeks, including David Bentley, Brad Friedel and Stewart Downing and O'Neill admits it is imperative he adds to his squad.

"I think umpteen players have been linked with us, but definitely we would need a proper squad," added O'Neill.

"I have said it before that last season we worked with the smallest squad in the Premiership and that is the situation we want to address this year."

  3. Of course Rafa could let O'Neale wait....and wait...and wait, and do a last minute deal. Villa need to sign players, if the groundsman arn't to end up as O'Neales makeshift midfield. There has been much talk about Liverpools funding issues. Less so about Villa, we have heard it all before about potential signings who don't materialise. It will be interesting to learn what funds Learner is giving to O'Neale over and above what he could recoup from his attempts of extortion to Liverpool. Not all doom and gloom though, I'm sure Martin O'Neale will be the man to bring the best out of the groundsman.

  4. Until Liverpool pay up the value that Villa have fairly put on Barry then he will stay a Villa player.

Barry has 2 years left on his contract and will have to perform to keep his place in the team. When his contract is up he will be 30 years old and potentially past his best and he will bes free to go to whoever wants his service, that is fair enough. Villa at that stage will have had the best out of him.

MON is right in sticking to his guns.

  5. "Well.. he is rated at £18 mill. They know the price... pay it or shut up about it.

It is Liverpool that are making this whole saga a drawn out affair. They are trying to offer £17 mill + Finnan.

Why not just stop the nonsense and stump up the extra million and just take him!
    "
Because he not not worth £18 million!
I think Rafa has lost interest now and without the sale of Alonso, all us Liverpool fans are delighted!
Arsenal can cough up the money if they like, Liverpool will wait until next year and get Barry for nothing if Arsenal dont buy him!

  6. Liverpool should just keep Alonso and Forget about Barry till next year, then get him for free and pay him more than he would have got anyway, that way they can keep Alonso and gain Barry.
Alonso is a better player anyway and he already knows the system.
Really PL needs a salary cap. Make the comp even, instead of teams just buying the league, earn it through a whole system. Crazy

  9. If Benitez didn't go running his mouth off at the start of the summer all of this would be over and done with at this stage and there would be no feeling og aminosity between the two clubs. But because Benitez decided he could get what he wants by pissing off everyone at Villa its still going. He probably could have got Barry for around £14-15 million if he kept his big fat mouth shut but because he didn't this transfer will probably go on for another month!Oh and in the end i hope we sell him to Arsenal for 1 million plus a signed Arsene Wenger coaching manuel that Martin O Neill can give to Benitez the next time he comes looking for one of our players!

  10. villa is a small average club with a small minded manager, barry at best is nothing but average but he's the best at villa.. barry is over-rated due to been english. RB should offer £5mill + voronin, if MON decline then tell him to stick barry up his villa!

  11. As a Liverpool fan i have to admit £18m is a lot of money for what i class as an average midfield player.£18m can buy you alot of player on the continent!!So come on Rafa, dont let martin call yout bluff

  14. To the liverpool supporters who KNOW they have no money its tough luck but this is the real world. To put it another way,I would like a rolls Royce but can only afford a Mondeo. So is it right for me to go to the Rolls dealer and demand they sell a car for the price of a Mondeo. The answer would be a polite no, as they are a Rolls dealer. But the answer from villa is also a polite no, because we are a proper club, not a bankrupt one

  15. Come on. Everybody knows that Barry is not price as 18 million in market. It is O,Neill doing all this crazy mark up. just hope rafa would use the cash to spend on bentley rather than barry.

  16. Villa have the right to mark Barry as a 18 million player and Liverpool have to respect that. BUT FIRST! Villa should respect Barry as he have sound his interest! Without Barry, Villa would not had climbed higher then before. If Liverpool have the kind of cash why they wait right! Liverpool have put their sincerity by increasing the amount they can afford. VIlla Villa... Just let go... Poor Barry....

  17. How are Villa being difficult? The guy is £18 million and that is that... if Liverpool want him... pay the money.. they have got that kind of cash so why are they messing about? Villa have made it clear from the start that they wont accept anything less as he is seen as an integral part of the team.

Is 18 mill so much to ask in the current climate when you really think about it?

    From deejaydomino@..., on Wed 16 Jul 11:23AM
  18. Better value than Carson for whom Liverpool asked 10 million of Villa & now look like selling to Stoke for 4.5 million. Who was greedy there ?

  19. Villa have the right to mark Barry as a 18 million player and Liverpool have to respect that. BUT! Villa have to respect Barry first! Without him, Villa would not climbed so high. Barry have sound out his interest, why still put things so difficult? Liverpool have express their by increase their bid. If they can pay, they already pay. Poor Barry,

  20. The reason you have not heard anymore, Mr O,Neill is G Barry is overpriced. and in my opinion overrated. I hope Mr Benitze has regained his sences? and put this saga to bed. Do your best Mr O,Neill to keep G Barry, Myself and others dont agree on how Barry will improve our midfield. best wish,es to you, and all Villa Fans.
