New Southampton owner Markus Liebherr is flying in this weekend to watch his first match since saving the club from the brink of extinction.

FOOTBALL: St Mary's, home of Southampton - 0

The Swiss billionaire will be on the south coast to watch Saints play Dutch giants Ajax in the Ted Bates Trophy this weekend.

"I am looking forward immensely to attending my first match at St Mary's for our friendly with Ajax on Saturday," he said.

"It will be my first visit since late May when I first became convinced to make my investment in this great club.

"I do hope that as many supporters as possible will be able to attend the fixture to cheer the team on."

So far 17,000 tickets have been sold for the clash with Martin Jol's side, but it is expected the figure could reach as many as 25,000.
