Blackburn came from 2-0 down to earn a credible 2-2 with Serie A side Roma in Bolano, Italy before losing the friendly match 3-2 on penalties.

Goals from Rodrigo Taddei and John Arne Riise put the Italians 2-0 in front but Paul Gallagher (pictured) got a goal back just before half-time from the penalty spot.

Academy player Aaron Doran then turned in a cross from Keith Treacy in the 52nd minute to level matters but Roma won on penalties with Alan Judge missing the decisive kick.

Steve Bruce began life as Sunderland manager in impressive fashion as his side romped to a 4-0 win at Darlington.

A Matt Plummer own goal, Kieran Richardson, Paul McShane and Roy O'Donovan were the goalscorers for the Premier League side.

It was a less agreeable start for Bruce's replacement at Wigan though as Roberto Martinez's side lost 1-0 at Crewe in the Spaniard's first match in charge with Joel Grant getting the only goal of the game.
