Eurosport - Sun, 16 Aug 21:21:00 2009
Re-live day two of the World Athletics Championships in Berlin with the 100 metres world record by Usain Bolt the main highlight.
20:50: Thanks for joining us there. The world is still reeling from Bolt's magic run. More of the same from tomorrow morning!
20:48: Gay, hilariously, ran 9.71, a US record and the third-fastest of all time to make him the second-quickest human ever but still not enough for gold. Powell ran 9.84, Chambers a very good sixth with 10 dead. Phew. That was quick. The top six all under 10 seconds!!
20:45: They're away first time, brilliant starts from Chambers and Gay but here comes Bolt! He lollops into the lead and he"s walking this and oh my gosh it's 9.59!! YOU HEAR THAT? 9.58!!ANOTHER WORLD RECORD! HUGE! Wow. Four lads line-up behind him, Gay second and I think Powell third but who cares, Bolt is the man.
20:40: Men's 100m final! Oh yeah, a fierce field indeed. Double Olympic champion and world record holder/smasher/joker Usain Bolt, double reigning champion Tyson Gay and professional bottler Asafa Powell - who is mucking about putting his big number on his face as he is introduced. Dwain Chambers is on the outside, reborn after his drug ban and massive ruck with UK Athletics, and Bailey, Bolt's mate and training partner.
20:35: Qualifiers for final of men's triple jump : 1. Nelson Evora (Portugal) 17.44, 2. Phillips Idowu (Britain) 17.32, 3. Li Yanxi (China) 17.27, 4. Leevan Sands (Bahamas) 17.20, 5. Arnie David Girat (Cuba) 17.15, 6. Teddy Tamgho (France) 17.11, 7. Momchil Karailiev (Bulgaria) 17.07, 8. Jadel Gregorio (Brazil) 17.06, 9. Igor Spasovkhodskiy (Russia) 17.02, 10. Nathan Douglas (Britain) 17.00, 12. 11. Alexis Copello (Cuba) 16.99, 12. Dmitrij Valukevic (Slovakia) 16.96
20:33: Valerie Vili seals shot put gold, she defends her title and throws another 20.25 to finish. She celebrates with Nadine Kleinert, who gets silver, while China"s Lijiao Gong takes bronze.
20:30: Oeser pushed up to nab silver with that run, the Germans are delighted but the Pole holds on to bronze. History made by Ennis, Britain's first multi-event gold since Daley Thompson 26 years ago.
20:28: Ennis goes off hard. Don't get too excited Jess! She sets the pace though and wants to have as good a crack as possible. Why not? She's around 10m away and the crowd is loving this, 27.95 for the first 200m. A really fast 400m but Dobrynska is trying to close! Oeser kicks on now and closes on Ennis. Dobrynska gets after her now, Oeser too and Ennis is fading. This is pretty tight! But Ennis kicks in the last 100, super finish, a great run and she comes home in 2:12.22 and JESSICA ENNIS IS THE WORLD CHAMPION!! What a run from Ennis, led from start to finish and powered away at the end even though she did not need to. Heptathlon gold for Britain for the first time at the World Champs.
20:23: The final heat of the heptathlon 800m and this will decide the medals. Britain's Jessica Ennis has a lead of 131 points from Kamila Chudzik but the Pole is a poor 800m runner. JenniferOeser is third and is a good 800m runner so should get silver - Natallia Dobrynskya in fourth is also pretty quick though. Ennis is the fastest in this field, she could break the overall British record but she"d have to smash her PB. All she needs to do is run sensible and stay close to Oeser although, realistically, she should win this race and wrap up the title.
20:19: Heat three of the heptathlon 800 and Louise Hazel is in this, she's 14th at the moment. Chernova surges ahead. Again, fairly meaningless this one other than minor placings. Easy win for the Russian in 2:09.15, no-one near her. Day second.
20:18: Vili hurls a massive 20.44 to pretty much wrap-up her shot-put title defence. That"s 24cm ahead of the German.
20:12: Women's shot - reigning champ Vili with another good throw, 20.16 this time so no improvement on her lead.
20:10: Heat two of the heptathlon 800m, Theisen of Canada starts well but Jessica Samuelsson is right on her, the Swede takes over and these two are in control. Samuelsson wins with Theisen second, again minor places at stake. 2:10.34 the winning time.
20:02: Wisse starts strongly but Casadei leads soon after, she races away and takes Marcussen with her, and it"s a Sweden-Norway one-two in just under 2:13.
20:00: The final heptathlon event, the 800m, was delayed by around 10 minutes but heat one is set to go now. None of the top-10ers in this, although Nadja Casadei of Sweden is one of the quickest in the field with a PB of 2:08.15. The fourth and final race has top four Jessica Ennis, Kamila Chudzik, Jennifer Oeser and the fading Natallia Dobrynska, with Briton Ennis leading overall. Ennis just needs to post a decent time in this, and she is the quickest in the field by two seconds or so.
19:55: In the women's shot put Kleinert is up again, she needs to smash her PB again to re-take the lead AND IT'S AN IMMENSE THROW!! It's there or thereabouts but two inches short, 20.20 but she doesn't care, it"s another PB and she is having loads of fun in front of her home fans.
19:50: The women's shot is really hotting up as Kiwi Villi hurls 20.25 to take the lead at the cut-off point for the final session.
19:42: Men's 400m semi-final qualifiers - 1. Kerron Clement (U.S.) 48.00 secs Q, 2. Bershawn Jackson (U.S.) 48.23 Q, 3. David Greene (Britain) 48.27 Q, 4. Felix Sanchez (Dominican Republic) 48.34 Q, 5. Javier Culson (Puerto Rico) 48.43 Q, 6. Danny McFarlane (Jamaica) 48.49 Q, 7. Periklis Iakovakis (Greece) 48.73 Q, 8. Jehue Gordon (Trinidad and Tobago) 48.77 Q
19:35: 400m semi-finals update - as suspected, LJ Van Zhyl is run out of the fastest loser spot, by 0.03 and it's the 17-year-old Jehue Gordon who makes it! Danny McFarlane took the other slot, with Jamaican team-mate Isa Phillips also out of it.
19:31: The crowd goes wild after a massive throw in the women's shot put from Nadine Kleinert, a PB throw of 20.06m. She"s in the lead and is celebrating like she"s won it!
19:29: Phillips is slow out of the blocks and Jackson too and the American is in trouble, he"s messed up his stride pattern. Greene, Iakovakis and Cisneros doing well. Jackson is back in it and he and Greene surge away to take it together in 48.23. Great finish from Jackson after a horrendous opening 200 but hello David Greene, another PB from the Brit, 48.27, he could have won that but both he and Jackson exchanged glances and eased off into the finish.
19:25: 400m hurdles semi-final number two - Australian World Student Games champion Tristan Thomas, Greece's Peri Iakovakis, US star Bershwan Jackson, Jamaica's Isa Phillips and Briton David Greene all vying for a place in the final. I would hazard a top three is need to progress after that last heat.
19:18: Gordon gets off well as Clement stutters but he comes back, Sanchez is fighting the inside lane, this is tight but Culson and Clement doing well and Van Zhyl is nowhere! The world number one is stranded in sixth and he tries to come back but run out of it in fifth or sixth! Clement wins, Sanchez with one of the best runs he"s had in years to come second from lane one, what a run from Felix Sanchez! Culson came third. 48 seconds dead won that, a very good time from Clement. Van Zhyl, sixth with 48.80, is almost certainly out.
19:10: Men's 400m hurdles semi-final one - Kerron Clement and LJ van Zhyl are the men to beat at the moment, with Jamaica's Danny McFarlane and Puerto Rican Javier Culson in good form. Dominican Felix Sanchez gets a rotten lane one draw but then he is not the runner he was five or six years ago. Uruguay's Andres Silva, in-form Aussie Brendan Cole and Trinidad's 17-year-old sensation Jehue Gordon are also in there.
19:02: Mens triple jump qualifying: Idowu with his second jump now and an easy clearance of the qualifying mark, 17.32 and he is in the final for sure.
19:00: Women's 400m semi-final results - the following qualify for the final next week: 1. Novlene Williams-Mills (Jamaica) 49.88 secs Q, 2. Amantle Montsho (Botswana) 49.89 Q, 3. Shericka Williams (Jamaica) 49.51 Q, 4. Antonina Krivoshapka (Russia) 49.67 Q, 5. Debbie Dunn (U.S.) 49.95 Q, 6. Sanya Richards (U.S.) 50.21 Q, 7. Anastasiya Kapachinskaya (Russia) 50.30 Q, 8. Christine Ohuruogu (Britain) 50.35 Q
18:57: Ohuruogu goes out slow as ever and Richards is up on her already but we know how Ohuruogu finishes. Litvinova is doing well though but Richards eases away and Ohuruogu is only third but as per usual she turns it on and sprints clear of the Russian to take second. 50.21 from Richards, Ohuruogu in 50.35 did just enough obviously saving it for the final as is Richards. The fastest losers, then, are Kapachinskaya and Dunn with a PB to dip under 50s and qualify. Good stuff from the American.
18:55: The third and final semi for the women's 400, Christine Ohuruogu and favourite Sanya Richards are the top runners in this one. Lyudmila Litvinova of Russia and Italy's former Cuban Libania Grenot have both gone 50.30 or thereabouts this season so are in better form than Ohuruogu and have a chance to qualify.
18:50: CONFIRMED - Sanders is out, 50.44, 0.15 slower than Kapachinskaya who is so far the second-fastest loser.
18:47: They are away and a good start for Sanders and Krivoshapka is off the pace, they hit the bend with Dunn coming up, Sanders fades badly, Williams, Krivoshapka and Dunn pull away, 49.51 wins it for Williams. Sanders comes fourth, she may struggle to qualify although that was stronger than race one.
18:45: 2007 World Championship silver-medallist Nicola Sanders lines up for Britain in semi two of the women's 400m in a very strong field featuring Jamaica's Shericka Williams, Russia's European indoor champ Antonina Krivoshapka and American Debbie Dunn, the former two having gone under 50s this season. 2001 champ Amy Mbacke Thiam is outside in lane eight.
18:40: The first of three semis for the women's 400m. Only top two through by right, then two fastest losers. No Brits in this one, but Russia"s Anastasiya Kapachinskaya, Novlene Williams-Mills of Jamaica and Amantle Montsho of Botswana the three bigger names here. Good start by the Russian and the aforementioned trio pull away quickly. Kapachinskaya fades badly though and Williams-Mills holds off Montsho to win in 49.88, 0.01 ahead of the Botswana runner. Kapachinskaya will have to wait but to be honest 50.30 should do it.
18:30: Britain's Phillips Idowu jumped 17.10m in his first qualifying round of the triple jump. The automatic qualifying mark is 17.15 so that should be fine but he will no doubt take at least one more just to try and make it formal.
18:28: 100 semi-final 2 results - 1. Tyson Gay (U.S.) 9.93 Q, 2. Asafa Powell (Jamaica) 9.95 Q, 3. Richard Thompson (Trinidad and Tobago) 9.98 Q, 4. Dwain Chambers (Britain) 10.04 Q, 5. Michael Frater (Jamaica) 10.14, 6. Monzavous Edwards (U.S.) 10.14, 7. Gerald Phiri (Zambia) 10.19, 8. Naoki Tsukahara (Japan) 10.25
18:25: Away first time with Gay slow to start and Powell leading, Gay surges through though and takes it in 9.93 with Powell second 9.95 and Thompson coming third in 9.98. I think Chambers was fourth and is in the final. Yes, he was fourth with 10.04. Frater misses out by coming fifth.
18:22: Semi-final two in the 100m with Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell and Britain's controversial Dwain Chambers all lining up in the middle three lates. Richard Thompson and Michael Frater outside them, Monzavous Edwards, Gerald Phiri and Naoki Tsakahara making up the eight.
18:20: 100m semi-final one results - 1. Usain Bolt (Jamaica) 9.89 Q, 2. Daniel Bailey (Antigua and Barbuda) 9.96 Q, 3. Darvis Patton (U.S.) 9.98 Q, 4. Marc Burns (Trinidad and Tobago) 10.01 Q, 5. Michael Rodgers (U.S.) 10.04, 6. Martial Mbandjock (France) 10.18, 7. Jaysuma Saidy Ndure (Norway) 10.20, Tyrone Edgar (Britain) DSQ
18:15: 9.89 FOR BOLT AND HE WAS JOGGING!!! Stunning run from the Olympic Champion. Daniel Bailey of American in second with 9.96. Darvis Patton with a season best of 9.98 to take third and Marc Burns gets the final spot in 10.01. Michael Rogers of America misses out.
18:12: DISASTER FOR TYRONE EDGAR - he false starts by just 0.094 and is out of the race. VERY cruel and VERY unlucky for the Britain.
18:10 WOW Usain Bolt with a FALSE START - if that was next year under new rules he would be OUT,
18:00: Next up is the first men's 100m semi-final and Usain Bolt and Britain's Tyrone Edgar both go in this one. Bolt was joking down the tunnel looking incredibly relaxed. He will go in lane six.
18:00: American Carmelita Jeter shows great quality to win the final heat in the women's 100m in 10.94. Shelly-Ann Fraser was trailing in second in a time of 11.02 Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinadad a quick 11:05 in third and the rest were nowhere.
18:00 Ennis's lead in the heptathlon is now 171 points ahead of Poland's Kamila Chudzik with just the 800m to come. Interestingly no British woman has EVER won heptathlon gold at the Worlds. Denise Lewis won two silvers in 1997 and 1999 and Kelly Sotherton won silver in 2007.
17:55: Defending champion Veronica Campbell Brown runs 10:99 in the third women's 100m second round heat. Another sub-11 run. Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie (11.08) and Muna Lee (11.13) get the other automatic spots. Verena Sailer of Germany came next in 11.26. The Jamaicans looking in good form here in Berlin. And Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser still to come of course.
17:50: Ennis gets a rather harsh no throw with her final javelin throw. However she looks in decent shape after that event. She will pick up 735 points for her first throw of 43.54m. We still have to crunch the numbers but she will be in with a great chance of the gold with just the 800m left.
17:45: 2005 World Champion Lauryn Williams wins the second heat in a time of 11.06 and she had plenty left in the tank there too. That's a season best for the American. Aleen Bailey (11.12) and Tahesia Harrigan (11:21) also qualify. Vida Anim (11.34) came next while a personal best from Cyprus' Eleni Artymate (11.37) gives her an outside chance of the semis.
17:35: Kerron Stewart makes a big statement in the first heat of the women's 100m second round by winning the first heat in 10.92. The Jamaican won the silver in Beijing. Chandra Sturrup and Semoy Hackett take the other automatic places. Guzel Khubbieva of Uzbekistan will hope her time of 11.43 gets her through as a fastest loser.
17:30: No improvement for Ennis with her second throw. Just about to begin now is the women's 100m second round. Four heats in total. Once that is out of the way we will have the men's semi-finals at 18:10. The men's final will take place at 20:35 so make sure the phone is off the hook then.
17:15Decent first throw from Ennis in the javelin - she has thrown 43.54m. That's only the seventh best throw so far but ahead of Nataliia Dobrynska who is seen as her main rival for gold. The standings after the long jump were; 1 Jessica Ennis (Gbr) 5064pts; 2 Jennifer Oeser (Ger) 4795; 3. Natallia Dobrynska (Ukr) 4795; 4. Kamila Chudzik (Pol) 4793; 5 Hanna Melnychenko (Ukr) 4781
17:00: Welcome to our coverage of the evening session here in Berlin and it should be a blockbuster as Jessica Ennis goes for gold in the heptathlon and Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay do battle in the men's 100m.

The British Eurosport commentator did not notice that Oeser fell during the race and got up and raced to silver!!!! What kind of commentary is that?!!!
the race today was quiet interesting, i mean the way Bolt was jogging,i really won't be suprise, if he sets another world record,
i used to be a sprinter, but i think i am a little weak on the track, seeing the race today ,really gave me more inspiration for the game.
