PARIS (AFP) - America's 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden will ride for Ducati next season it was announced on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old - known as the 'Kentucky Kid' - has had a modest season with Honda, though his second-placed finish in the US Grand Prix on Sunday saw a slight return to form and leaves him eighth in the standings nearly 200 points behind leader Valentino Rossi.
"We are very happy that Nicky is joining us," said Ducati managing director Claudio Domenicali.
"We are certain that his never-say-die attitude, riding style and character will be great additions to our team in 2009."
Hayden - who has been at Honda for the past six years - will team up with present world champion Casey Stoner of Australia and paid a handsome tribute to the time he had spent with Honda.
"I've been with Honda a long time. I owe a big thanks to everybody who's ever worked with me at Honda. I've worked with a lot of great people at HRC, Honda and Repsol too.
"It was always my big dream as a kid to race for this team. It's something I've enjoyed a lot. I want to thank everybody there, all the guys from tyre technicians to crew chiefs and all the way up.
"Sure, it hasn't just been one big holiday, along the way there's been some tough days but a lot of good days too. Winning the World Championship was by far the highlight of my career so far."
Masumi Hamane, Honda president, was also highly complimentary about Hayden.
"We wish to thank Nicky for all he has achieved for Honda both as a rider and a man," said Hamane.
"Nicky and Honda have shared much success and a few disappointing days but in each case Nicky has always behaved cheerfully and has led the team in a positive way."

The man is a total loser its always the bikes fault, but it worked for Rossi! he goes well in yankland he may do well in the AMA but like most yanks rubbish, always a reason why not, a real sado
GO NICKY...........!!!!
Ducati can't do any worse as far as I see it, they have had everyone but the master himself (Valentino Rossi of course) but then again Motogp would become as boring as F1 if Valle had the fastest bike under is @#$%.
I think the Ducati will work with the Hayden aggressive all action style
Good luck to nicky he has never been thought so highly of as Dani Pedrosa so its best for him to go good luck to him.
bad move for him he will fail just like all the other ducati riders
