Alonso: Toro Rosso better than BMW

Eurosport - Tue, 16 Sep 08:08:00 2008

Former double world champion Fernando Alonso believes that Scuderia Toro Rosso have overtaken BMW-Sauber to become Formula One's third force after Sebastian Vettel's stunning breakthrough triumph in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

2008 Italian GP Renault Alonso - 0

Alonso finished fourth at the weekend, three positions and almost half a minute adrift of Vettel (pictured), F1's new youngest race-winner.

Vettel and team-mate Sebastien Bourdais secured top-six finishes in the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps just a week earlier. That means STR have notched up 16 points in the last two outings, more than any other team save for Ferrari, whose engine has taken much of the credit for the small Faenza-based outfit's astonishing recent upsurge in form.

Alonso - who held the record for both youngest-ever pole-sitter and race-winner in F1 until Vettel stole his thunder - was one of the first drivers to congratulate the German on his sensational triumph and reckons STR has now moved ahead of all teams on performance terms, bar Ferrari and McLaren-Mercedes.

"You could tell that sooner or later they were going to be on pole and on the podium," the 27-year-old Renault star told As.

"Right now I see them right behind Ferrari and McLaren."

One team STR certainly has moved ahead of is parent concern Red Bull Racing, leapfrogging the Milton Keynes-based squad into sixth spot in the constructors' rankings by a single marker and - lying 14 points adrift of both Toyota and Renault with four grands prix remaining on the calendar - theoretically in with a chance now of stealing fourth spot before the 2008 season is out.

Despite RBR - with whom Vettel has signed for next year - having struggled of late with its Renault horsepower, the 21-year-old insists he has no regrets about making the switch.

"First of all, no matter what happens, next year I am going to race for Red Bull Racing," he underlined. "I don't see it as a step backwards."

  1. barryww1958...Yes I agree Alonso should not keep being called "Two time world champion", he is a "Double world Champion", and as far as 'melted rubber' calling him "Alonshole" very clever...but you should really be in bed if you have school in the mornings.

  2. The facts are true, STR have done an execptional job during this past few rounds of the championship but it is who ever comes home and finishes the year in third spot that will become the third most powerful team in formula one, not just one off race. Red Bull at one stage looked like upstaging BMW but they have drifted backwards and STR have taken their place and are challenging BMW not overtaking. But it is true that both Red Bull and STR are the future teams in Formula One and they have a bright future ahead of them, but what is going to happen when manufactures decide to withdraw their support from Formula One, ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME. And for the record Lewis is only as good as his car and holds no outstanding talent, only when lips and tongue is involved.

  3. Well said vinnydawg, he had plenty of FACTS posted but they didn't fit his warped little view of Saint Alonso so he decided they were just rumours. Maybe he should leave Alonsoworld and join the rest of us in the real world. Alonso's just looking for a job at Toro Rosso because he knows Renault's car next is @#$%. He's spoken to Honda but can't make his mind up. Maybe now he knows he can't get a red car he'll take anything but Renault.

  4. Most of the hate on this board for Alonso comes from his rivalry with Hamilton last year. Both Alonso and Hamilton are great drivers and both of them have the tendency to open their mouth too often in front of the press. Although most of the time it is media that phrases the questions in a certain way or distorts the answers to their own means.

Now for Alonso's comments, he is not too far off. The fortunes of Toro Rosso and Toyota are rising while that of BMW and Red Bull are waning. The real poorman (in terms of performance not expenditure) are the Honda team.

  5. Torro Rosso???
    Toro Ruosso?????
    Touro Rosso????????

We know Britons can't spell a single foreign word right, but can't you even copy & paste?

  6. Alonso knows next years Renault will be @#$% and is after a new seat. People keep saying one performance doesn't make Vettel the new Schumacher, and by the same measure this win doesn't put Toro Rosso ahead of BMW. Do it cosistently and you are the "best of the rest", although I'm sure both teams they are aiming to be a lot more than that, neither of them wants to be third when a new start next year could put them first.

If I was a team owner I would be hesitant over Alonso anyway. I've never really rated him, and personally don't think he's a double world champion class of driver, although I accept the fact he worked bloody hard for both his crowns. I think there are much better talents out there and I'd be wanting to blood a new talent (like Bruno Senna), and given that I'd want to put said driver alongside someone with experience I'd be looking elsewhere I'd be constantly worried that Naomi Campbell was about to jump out the car and throw a toy phone at me!!!

  7. Alonshole is a washed up and used up douche. Who cares what he thinks about anything anymore anyway?

  8. Is there any journalist that could write an artical about Alonso without saying two time world champion ? They hardly ever say current world champion when writing about Kimi , and they should . Alonso needs to wake up , Toro Ruosso better than BMW , better get out the Wellies , it's getting deep! Alonso is rubbish , real smart move leaving McLaren because he could not accept the face that a rookie was better than him ! How many points you got this year Alonso ?

  10. You want facts, but won't offer any. You post "To: voodoopenguin: No parallel universe here, I would just like to stick with fact. Not rumour, not emotion, not ill informed opinion, just the facts." Then you dispute our arguments without any facts to support yours, and then you launch emotional, ill informed, opinions and insult those trying to carry on a spirited debate, whilst hiding behind freedom of speech to obscure your flawed logic. My post about Lewis being a drivers title contender two seasons in a row is a fact. How do you dispute that? The details and transcripts from "Spygate" are available. Being an engineer with acccess to a computer though I'd assume you know how to do your own homework...if I could believe anything you've said so far. Good luck.

  11. Absolutely right Fernando - And oh! - Yes I just realised also that there will be a vacancy at Torro Rosso - What a coincidence!

  12. TO: vinnydawg67: That's my point, I did not offer any facts, just opinion. BUT, whenever I asked for facts, as I did quite often, they were not forthcoming. Much hearsay, much opinion, much rhetoric, much emotion, but absolutely no facts at all. And as an engineer, I deal in facts. The rhetoric here tonight was anything but factual and if you care to review my posts, you will see that never did I raise an issue as fact. Rather, in every post, I made it clear that I was seeking facts, and offering nothing more than opinion. I trust that you will do better in future. Raven

  13. Hey guys another update on the cheating story: If Alonso wouldn´t have been treated the way he was at McLaren, who were the first ones to start stabing in the back, this probably wouldn´t even had happened.

  14. I'm from America as well Raven. I've got no problem with freedom of speech, but where were your facts? Your only arguments were totally off subject and based fully on your opinions. Sleep well hypocrite!

  15. HAHAHAH! Better than BMW? How Better Than Toyota? How? They can throw tons of money and resources, while STR is a "little" fish in a BIG pond of teams....This article and headline are confusing. I do not see STR as "the Best of the Rest" by a long shot...

From SFD Loves the Bay Area, on Mon 15 Sep 10:19PM
  16. To: vinnydawg6: I guess that arguing the facts of the matter is of less interest to you than arguing your own opinion. And that's fine, where I come from, we believe in the freedom of speech, we believe that everyone has the right to express their views, no matter how uninformed they might be. Have a nice evening...

  17. At least Hamilton backs his words with action. Two seasons in, and two title contentions says so.

  18. Nope, you're wrong again Raven. You've taken that title today...congrats I guess.

  19. With regard to oral anal expulsions, I think you will find that Hamilton gets the gold medal for that...

From Tiger, on Mon 15 Sep 9:53PM
  20. They have the money, but not like the money & resources of a manufacturer like BMW. I'm still confused by the whole base of this article. I'll give STR their props, they are definitely on the upswing. This does not make them the "third" force in F1 and definitely not better than BMW. Once again Alonso has a case diarrhea of the mouth.
