Championship - Round-up: Olsson puts WBA top

Eurosport - Wed, 16 Sep 10:03:00 2009

Jonas Olsson scored twice as West Brom moved to the top of the Championship table with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Doncaster at The Hawthorns.

Jonas Olsson - 0

Roberto Di Matteo's side fell behind early on when 20-year-old forward Waide Fairhurst scored on his first start for Rovers.

But Olsson powered home a header from a Graham Dorrans corner to bring Albion level in the 19th minute, before converting another Dorrans set-piece to give his side the lead.

Substitute Chris Wood then added a third goal late on to kill off any hopes of a Doncaster comeback.

The victory maintains Albion's unbeaten start to the season and puts them a point ahead of Newcastle and Middlesbrough at the summit, although the Magpies do have a game in hand.

Middlesbrough maintained their early-season momentum with an accomplished 3-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

Boro needed an own goal from Darren Purse to cancel out home striker Luke Varney's stunning early opener, before second-half goals from Frenchman Jeremie Aliadiere and roving winger Adam Johnson lifted Gareth Southgate's side into the top two.

Once Aliadiere had fired his third goal in two matches to give Southgate's side the lead early in the second half there seemed little doubt as to the outcome.

And Johnson underlined the visitors' extra class with a brilliant 84th-minute finish to secure Boro's fifth league win from seven matches.

Gary Hooper celebrated his 100th career start with a brace as Scunthorpe resoundingly brought Preston's unbeaten start to the new season to an end with a 3-1 win at Glanford Park.

Hooper was only a substitute for Saturday's 4-0 annihilation of Crystal Palace but made the most of his surprise recall to score twice and create another for Grant McCann as North End's 10-game unbeaten run stretching back to last season was arrested.

Preston did manage to pull a goal back just before the hour mark with Jon Parkin thundering home from close range.

Coventry registered their first victory in five games as a 3-2 win ended Sheffield United's unbeaten start to the season.

Leon Best blasted home his third goal of the season after 12 minutes before Jamie Ward levelled for the visitors in even more stunning fashion.

But the hosts were 3-1 to the good with an hour gone as Clinton Morrison capitalised on an unfortunate mistake from Nick Montgomery before Martin Cranie headed his first goal for the club.

James Harper's finish ensured a nervy final 15 minutes for the Sky Blues.

Tom Cleverley's early strike was enough to earn Watford a 1-0 victory and increase the pressure on Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock and Paulo Sousa was left frustrated again after a dour goalless draw against rivals Bristol City left Swansea with just one win from seven games.

Penalties either side of half-time saw Leicester and Peterborough claim a point each from an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Walkers Stadium.

Darren Ferguson's visitors dominated the opening 40 minutes and should have been several goals up before George Boyd slotted home from the spot to give them the lead.

But Nigel Pearson's side have not lost at home in over a year and fought back to deservedly claim a point when Matty Fryatt scored a spot-kick of their own.

Mark Robins secured his first win as Barnsley boss with a 3-2 victory at Derby to consign the Rams to a third consecutive defeat.

Rob Hulse put Derby in front in the first half but Adam Hamill levelled before half-time with a stunning strike.

Gray put the Tykes in front with a breakaway goal in the second half, Anderson De Silva added a third in stoppage time on the counter attack and although there was still time for Shaun Barker to score his first goal for the Rams, the damage had already been done.

Former Norwich striker Rob Earnshaw returned to East Anglia to deny 10-man Ipswich their first Championship victory of the season as Nottingham Forest took a point in a 1-1 draw.

The Tractor Boys took the lead inside a minute when Grant Leadbitter, making his home debut, fired the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

But Earnshaw struck just moments after being introduced off the bench in the 59th minute and Town finished the game with 10 men when defender Gareth McAuley was dismissed for a professional foul on substitute Dele Adebola on the edge of the area.

QPR's clash with Crystal Palace was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Loftus Road.

  2. Thats a bit negative Frank!
Top of the league, 6 goals in 2 games, not playing at our best yet
A shower? Di Matteo's position in question? is this the same club were talking about?
Agree entirely with Paul C's points. We were the Donny of the premier league last year, outpossessing quality sides and losing! Must get Morro fit.

  3. So Frank agrees with me, Cricket specials just bleats on about some East midlands team, yet I get two thumbs down, I wonder which Yahoo Members would just press the thumbs down button without even putting there comments across as to WHY they disagree........

  5. Good man Paul C.
I've been supporting this shower for over 30 years
and I thought I was the only one. How long do you think
    Di Matteo will last?

  6. Who said we have to play well to win! Ground out victory against a spirited Donnie side that came to frustrate and actually played some decent football with no killer instinct (Apart from Goal) Watching Doncaster was like watching us last season, better team first half yet go in level then over-powered in the second half.

    My Ratings: -

Carson - 7 - Handling was good, kicking excellent, quiet night
Zuiverloon - 6 - Never looked comfy, hardly got forward, i've said it before...hates playing with brunt
Mattox - 4 - Is really starting to worry me, shocking first touch, terrible distribution, Cech @ LB?
Olsson - 8 - Excellent 2 goals, defended well, won every header
Martis - 9 - My M.O.M, his reading of the game was superb, great defensive cover when needed
    Cech - 6 - Injured after 5 mins, hardly had a touch
Dorrans - 5 - Awful first half, improved second, not a touch on recent performances.
Mulumbu - 7 - Distribution wasn't always great but boy would we miss him if he didn't play
Koren - 2 - One of the worst performances i've ever seen in an albion shirt, looked like he didn't know where he was playing, didn't tackle, pass or drive the team on, simply shocking Robert.
Brunt - 6 - I've said it before I don't think he looks match fit, struggles to defend, never really got involved
Bednar - 8 - Worked tirelessly for very little reward, never let there defence settle

    Subs:

Wood - 7 - Simply stunning finish, one of the best i've seen for a long time, keep em coming chris!

Thomas - 7 - Again worked hard but got little reward from chambers (Remember him?), won free kick for second goal, does like to go down when he's touched

Tex - 5 - Had about 2 minutes, basically tactical

RDM: I have to admit I think we got away with it a little tonight, Dorrans, Koren and Mulumbu simply does not work, we have to play 4-4-2 when possible. Against a more ruthless team we defo would have lost but three points is three p
