Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio says coach Claudio Ranieri has had an immediate effect on the team after their poor start to the season.

Former coach Luciano Spalletti quit the day after they lost their opening two Serie A matches to Genoa and Juventus.

Ranieri was appointed immediately and, after a 12-day break, his new side earned their first points of the season with a late win at Siena.

"At Siena we achieved an important victory and we have put into practice what Ranieri has asked of us," Sergio said.

"We are a team with great players and it is difficult to understand what happened in the first matches. Now we hope to improve.

"Ranieri wants a more compact team as we know that we can score goals and create chances. We must try to defend better as the basis for one of the lads up front to make an opening and settle the game."

Roma, who face Fiorentina at home on Sunday, are 14th in Serie A.
