Terry still sore after brief knockout

Wed, 16 Sep 22:04:34 2009

Chelsea captain John Terry was knocked unconscious during the Blues' 1-0 Champions League victory over Porto at Stamford Bridge.

Terry was left poleaxed by an elbow from Porto captain Bruno Alves in the first half but managed to recover to complete the full 90 minutes last night. The England captain received lengthy treatment on the pitch and was clearly left groggy by the collision, on the edge of the Porto penalty area.

"I went out for a little bit but managed to come round," Terry confirmed. "It's a little bit sore still."

Terry's painful night was made a little easier to cope with when Nicolas Anelka settled Chelsea's opening Group D game with a winner three minutes after the interval.

The France international beat Porto goalkeeper Helton at the second attempt to put the Blues top of the group.

Anelka seized the chance to shine in the absence of banned striker Didier Drogba, and coach Carlo Ancelotti was more than pleased with his contribution.

"Anelka is a great player," said the Italian. "With Drogba or without Drogba, he can play alone in the centre of the attack and together with Drogba. I am very happy for him, because he is doing very well now.

"Our attacking play was good in the first half, and we had a problem in the second half to maintain that. I don't think that Drogba was missed.

"I think the first half was difficult, because we wanted to pass the ball in the centre - and Porto closed us down.

"After we scored, we had opportunities to score a second goal. But we didn't keep the ball or control the game towards the end."

  3. I am not a Chelsea fan, but I have great admiration to the English captain. He leads by example and he does not whinge or complain about things. This piece of news would have been a big bang if it was Gerrard or Drogba or Ronaldo or any player in Arsenal. Terry is truly a rare spieces

  4. him and cole had great games. the rest wewre pretty average. Essien had so much of the ball yet done nothing with it, ballack went missing 2nd half, Kalou wouldnt stay wide, Anelka and Malouda came too deep. Ivanovic done well 2nd half and when Belletti came on the formation and shape went out the window.

happy with the win but worst they have played this season probably
