Wigan Star Quizzed Over Assault

Tue 16 Oct, 07:09 PM

Wigan prop Iafeta Paleaaesina has been arrested for assault after allegedly breaking a man's jaw.

The 17-stone forward is alleged to have punched bus driver James Campbell in the face to cause the injury.

The incident took place at 5.20am on Saturday October 6, in the car park of a Wigan railway station - just hours after the Warriors were knocked out of the Super League play-offs by Leeds Rhinos.

Paleaaesina, 25, a popular Kiwi import at the club, voluntarily attended Wigan police station last Tuesday to be questioned by officers from British Transport Police, as the incident took place on railway property.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Paleaaesina was bailed by police until November 22, pending a decision on whether or not he will be charged with the offence.

He played in the October 5 final eliminator at Headingley, which saw Wigan's hopes of reaching the Grand Final shattered at the last hurdle.

The hard-running prop has become a firm fans' favourite at the JJB Stadium.

A spokesman for Wigan Warriors said: "We are aware of the situation and it is being dealt with by the authorities. We cannot make any further comment at this stage."
