Championship - Hume: 'I could have died'

Barnsley striker Iain Hume has claimed that he "could have died" when he was elbowed in the head by Sheffield United defender Chris Morgan during last weekend's South Yorkshire derby.

Hume (pictured right) required emergency surgery on a fractured skull and also suffered internal bleeding, and is not expected to play again this season.

The 25-year-old Canada international remains in hospital and has hit out at referee Andy D'Urso, claiming he had sought protection from Morgan's physical approach before the incident in the 31st minute of the 1-1 draw at Oakwell.

"I pleaded with the referee to give me some protection," Hume told the Sunday Times.

"I could have died."

Morgan was booked for the elbow, and Hume is angry the former Tykes defender was not sent off.

"I feel disappointed that he [Morgan] did not get a red card," said Hume.

"I had complained to the referee earlier about being elbowed."

Barnsley's medical staff initially thought Hume had suffered only a concussion and sent him home, but later tests discovered a fractured skull.

"Last Saturday night the signs were that I was suffering from concussion," he said.

"It was only through the passage of time that I deteriorated.

"Subsequently a brain scan revealed the injuries were dangerous, and I became an emergency. Then my immediate thoughts were about my family and what effect this would have on them.

"Having thoughts like that is an horrific experience."

  3. Good Luck Iain in your recovery.I've seen the incident again and again. Its a red card everyday of the week for me,and that comment has been made by some top referee's. I just hope you get some justice from the FA and also if you take legal action against Chris Morgan some finacial justice. Your a cracking player and I'm a Barnsley season ticket holder and this season you've had no protection from any referee.
Fair enough he wasn't looking at the ball, but he hadn't even jumped off of the ground so why would he need to lead with the elbow. The intention was definately there.Especially has he had just done the same literally minutes earlier. But unfortunately because of the other two being sent off earlier the referee bottled it.
That's what happens when you get so called premiership referees in the championship. Its all about them, look at me I'm a top referee........Any way get well soon pal. Hope to see you playing soon with the reds again back at the TARN!!!!

  6. Hope you make a full and speedy recory Iain. As for the thug that is Chris Morgan, hopefully he will be handed a suitable suspension, (based on the Ben Thatcher incident some time ago) at least 10 games. My personal view is that he should be banned until Iain Hume is fit enough to return, along with a charge of GBH!
