King, together with British Cycling president Brian Cookson, is credited with overseeing the organisation's transformation from "near bankruptcy" in 1996 to Olympic heavyweight in 12 years.

British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford, whose team won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, said: "Over the past 12 years, Peter has put the structures in place and led British Cycling to its current success."

Cookson said: "It is no exaggeration to say that he [King] has been pivotal in transforming British Cycling from near bankruptcy to a world-leading governing body with a reputation for consistently delivering on its objectives."

Drake will step into King's shoes on January 1 2009, while King will continue to work with with British Cycling as an executive director.

  2. Peter King is the unsung hero of British cycling success. He came to British Cycling when it looked finished. With the unassuming leadership of Brian Cookson and the management skills of Peter King, failure has been transformed into success. Well done Peter, and thanks for staying on as Executive Director to support what still needs to be done.
