Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne has been handed a shock call-up to the England squad to face Germany in Berlin.
The 20-year-old Mancienne is currently on loan with Wolves, and has never made a competitive appearance for the Premier League leaders.
He comes in for Rio Ferdinand who misses out with a back injury, and is preferred to Tottenham Hotspur's Jonathan Woodgate.
Fabio Capello's side play their historic rivals in a friendly match on Wednesday evening in the Olympic Stadium, which hosted the 2006 World Cup final.
Wayne Rooney is also out as he has a calf strain while David Beckham's inactivity has seen him denied the chance to earn his 108th cap.
The Major League Soccer season ended several weeks ago for the midfielder, rendering him ineligable under coach Capello's rule that players must be in regular first-team action to be selected.
There is still no place for Newcastle striker Michael Owen, who scored against Wigan on Saturday but has not convinced Capello of his form and fitness.
Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, who scored in the 2-0 win at Arsenal on Saturday, could earn his first cap along with his Villa team-mate Curtis Davies.
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is preferred to Tottenham Hotspur's Tom Huddlestone. However, Huddlestone's team-mate Darren Bent is rewarded for his recent form with a place among the strikers along with two former Spurs, Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch.
23-man England squad for next Wednesday's friendly against Germany in Berlin:
Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Scott Carson (West Bromwich Albion), Joe Hart (Manchester City).
Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Matthew Upson (West Ham United), John Terry (Chelsea), Curtis Davies (Aston Villa), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Michael Mancienne (Chelsea), Micah Richards (Manchester City).
Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).
Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Portsmouth), Darren Bent (Tottenham Hotspur), Peter Crouch (Portsmouth), Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa).

WHO'S IN CHARGE OF OUR NATIONAL GAME(FOOTBALL)? AGENTS? THE PRESS? CLUB MANAGERS? THE PLAYERS THEMSELVES? ALIENS? THE GOVERNMENT? OR THE SWEET FA!!!
i reply to smoggie yes i rate wheater and downing they are good kids and deserve there chance as do the villa kids that are coming thou thats fair play to martin oneil what a fantastic manager he is ,all the young players that he has brought in at villa and they can only get better with him there and long may he stay there .But this young lad Mancienne needs to step up now and take this chance as its only a friendly and this is where they can learn as kids for later years in life ,its no good playing the same team every game in friendlys when we have these kids knocking on the doors
They took a risk on Theo, it paid off against Croatia. Give this lad a chance. At least he is not pulling out with injuries
put woodgate in aswell as mancinene n king cme on capello make da rite choice
yo alan youre dumm arsenal have got english players wilshere, randall, hoyte, simpson, wallcott, ramsey, gibbs and many more
mancienne is a star of the future for chelsea.
Yes all these young English players thrive at the Arsenal in how many years there what English players has Wenger brought through ? because there ain't any in the team at the moment and don't bother say Walcott because he was bought from Southampton
Smoggie, you mean you have to sit and watch that tosh week in week out? - you poor sod!
Mike Mancienne will go a long way. He is sensible unassuming and very talented. We need more players like him playing for England. Roll over, Rio!
Peter S ever seen Downing play week in, week out? I think not
Remember that Mancienne is contracted to Chelsea & as such will be going nowhere once his contract with Wolves ends. I believe that this young central defender is being groomed as the eventual replacement for John Terry.
Smoggie, there's loads of players who have been playing "alright" this season - that doesn't mean they have the right to play for England. As for Downing, it's got nothing to do with form - he has always been and always will be @#$%.

Pity that our goalkeepers are not in form this year. Hart should be dropped as he has had some very large scores against him like 4 goals let in! Going of the subject of England, Hart should be stood down in preference for young Schmicheal at Man city.
In reply to Heine,
how come the fantastic arsenal youngsters do not get regular games in the 1st team if they are so good? & you'd risk them for their country?
No doubt that England are going to LOSE and Germany are going to WIN
so robert.hamlett, you would pick Macienne - an unproven Premiership defender(debateable since he's never played in the Prem and wont any time soon at Chelsea) ahead of Wheater, who in 44 games has proven that not only can he hack it on the Prem could be a top defender?
And woody you've seen Downing play twice this season congrats to you, I'm sure 2 games makes you qualified enough to judge a player, ever thought of becoming a scout?, seems you'll be very good at it [/sarcasm]
From someone who's seen Downing play more than twice this season I admit his form has been up and down of sorts this season but recently, Downing's been playing alright and I also believe if it wasn't for his 2 shocking penalties misses, we’d have seen the same Downing that bagged 10 goals last season and put in some rather good displays.
Soon he will be calling up the wonderful talents that Wenger has been creating. Those boys are nothing short of being brilliant.
debatable whether there is a great deal of justification for this match. england dont have a competitive game for months. they could have used this week to give the players a rest and/or catch up any outstanding games (e.g. man utd v fulham). players may be in fine form now, even play well in the match but it will have little or no bearing by the time england play a proper match again. the inclusion of a player who is on loan and yet to play for 'his' club exposes the depth of the farce.
