Nico Rosberg has given his Formula One employers Williams a clear ultimatum that he will not hang around unless the team's form improves markedly in 2009 as he bids to save a grand prix career in serious danger of hitting the skids.
Rosberg registered his first two podium finishes in the top flight this year - with third position in the season curtain-raiser Down Under in Melbourne and then an inspired charge to the runner-up spot in the sport's inaugural night race in Singapore in September.
He also qualified six times inside the top eight, but despite that, Rosberg endured a generally dispiriting 2008 campaign at the Grove-based outfit, winding up a lowly 13th in the final drivers' standings.
Aside from his brace of impressive rostrums, there were just three further single-point finishes for eighth place along the way as Williams' development patently failed to keep pace with that of its immediate rivals and the squad ultimately ended the campaign just eighth in the constructors' title chase.
Moreover, on three occasions Rosberg even failed to break out of the dreaded Q1 in qualifying, and he has admitted that his F1 career is currently stuck in neutral whilst those of former junior category sparring partners Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica amongst others are accelerating rapidly up through the gears.
Though McLaren-Mercedes made overtures to secure his services in place of the departing Fernando Alonso at the end of 2007, the 23-year-old remained loyal to 16-time former world champions Williams for a third consecutive term. That loyalty, he stresses, is now close to breaking point.
When asked when he will decide where he wishes to drive in 2010 and beyond, Rosberg told Dutch website Formule 1 Race Report 'by the middle of the coming season'.
"If Williams are still not there, then I will have to think about somewhere else," he urged. "I have to think of my own career.
"There are other options for me, but if I wait for too long, those doors obviously close."

who cares where he goes,oh and thanx a bunch for spoiling DCs last GP.
Nico has a German mother, was born in Germany and has a German passport. That makes him a German.
not printable - coz he was born in germany.
he is the son of Keke - Finnish - why call him German all the time!!! - anyway it is Daddy who will decide - he is his manager
Button probably saw potential at Honda with finance from its manufacturing base Rumour on the grape vine Honda’s KERS development seems to be going well and they shifted to the 09 development after the 4th race. Not sure What Rosberg saw at Williams to turn down a ride at Mclaren. There winter development seems to go well but then they always seem to run out of steam mid-season.Could it be the lack off finance?
He doesn't share a manager with Jensen Button does he?
What a thought! The late great Senna & the Professor @ McLaren comes to mind. Fantastic. With each spurring the other on. It would have been a two horse race. Who would have won? I think that would be a difficult call.
Actually Mclaren tried to get Vettel but that didn't happen. So they got Heikki. Imagine what could have been!
I believe if Williams had released him to McLaren he could have been a serious contender for WDC this year.
I dint know Mclarren wanted his ahead if Heikki
Nothing we didn't already know. Macca want him but he's not a No2.. Ferrari are booked up for a few years. Renault couldn't get him 'cos of Alonso so BMW look favourite with him replacing Nick. But they have to perform, better than they ended the season. Willims want to keep him but understand his frustration and have a great lad in the wings.
