Jewell delighted by Barnes return

Tue 16 Dec, 05:00 PM

Paul Jewell has admitted his delight at Giles Barnes' return from a long-term knee injury in Derby's 2-2 draw at Charlton on Monday night.Barnes has been out since suffering the injury in training in February and was operated on by world-renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman in Colorado the following month.

The 20-year-old academy product came through a behind-closed-doors friendly at Leeds' Thorp Arch training ground earlier this month and made his first-team comeback as a 54th minute substitute for Ruben Zadkovich at The Valley.

"He is nowhere near 100% fit but with the lack of midfield players we have available to us at the moment he was included. It was nice to see him back," said Jewell.

"He has been out for eight or nine months and he has shown great enthusiasm in training.

"We would like to get him a couple more games behind closed doors because he is obviously not match fit, but he has got 40 minutes under his belt and it won't do him any harm."
