How The POOLs Might Finish

Thu 17 Jan, 12:47 AM

Heineken Cup history has already been made in this season's competition with all eight quarter-finalists still to be decided entering the final round of pool stage action this weekend.

Here we assess the current state of play, and identifies the likely quarter-finalists.

POOL ONE (London Irish, Perpignan, Newport Gwent Dragons, Treviso)

A first quarter-final appearance is guaranteed for London Irish if they beat Italian hosts Treviso on Saturday, with a bonus-point victory confirming top spot and a home draw.

Second-placed Perpignan, who visit the Dragons, are destined to fill one of two best runners-up spots. Treviso and the Dragons are already out.

POOL TWO (Gloucester, Ospreys, Bourgoin, Ulster)

Gloucester, despite their 32-15 drubbing by the Ospreys last weekend, will win the group - and secure a home quarter-final tie - if they see off Ulster at Kingsholm on Sunday.

The Ospreys can also march on as a best runner-up by defeating Bourgoin in France, but any slip-up would probably see them eliminated. Bourgoin and Ulster are out.

POOL THREE (Cardiff Blues, Stade Francais, Bristol, Harlequins)

Victory for Cardiff Blues at Bristol on Sunday would secure the pool, although it is possible for them to still finish top if they lose and French champions Stade Francais come unstuck against Harlequins.

A bonus point success at the Twickenham Stoop could see Stade sneak through the back door, while Bristol are realistically relying on beating Cardiff and hoping Quins do them a favour to keep their quarter-final dream alive.

POOL FOUR (Saracens, Glasgow, Biarritz, Viadana)

Saracens, who have never reached the Heineken Cup quarter-finals, need one point from their trip to Glasgow on Friday night - or deny the Scots a winning bonus - and a last-eight spot will be booked.

A landslide Glasgow victory could see them top the pool, although a win of any size would thrust them into the best runner-up equation.

POOL FIVE (Wasps, Munster, Clermont Auvergne, Llanelli Scarlets)

Wasps, Munster and Clermont Auvergne could all finish on 19 points in the so-called pool of death after Saturday's final round of fixtures, a scenario that should favour Munster.

A bonus-point victory for Munster against Wasps at Thomond Park would see them finish top, although they could still do it without a bonus, while Heineken Cup holders Wasps effectively need a draw or win to take the group spoils. Clermont, who visit already-eliminated Llanelli Scarlets, have an outside chance of a best runner-up place.

POOL SIX (Toulouse, Leinster, Leicester, Edinburgh)

Toulouse, three-time European champions, will take the group if they beat Edinburgh in France on Saturday.

Edinburgh and Leicester have already crashed out, while Leinster hold the minutest of chances to progress, either as group winners if Edinburgh stun Toulouse or as a best runner-up if they smash Leicester at Welford Road and a crop of other results work in their favour.

Probable last eight: London Irish, Gloucester, Cardiff Blues, Saracens, Wasps, Toulouse, Perpignan, Ospreys.
