Premier League - Newcastle sign £10m Cisse

Tue, 17 Jan 21:34:00 2012

Newcastle have completed the signing of Freiburg striker Papiss Demba Cisse.

Papiss Cisse - 0

The Senegal international has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal after flying in for talks, with the clubs reportedly settling on a fee of around £10 million.

Cisse, 26, joins international team-mate Demba Ba, who left for the African Cup of Nations having scored 15 goals to date this season, on the Magpies' books.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admitted that Cisse had been his main target for some time.

"Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has at the end of the play," he said.

"He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years.

"Unfortunately he was out of reach, financially, for us in the summer, but it recently became apparent that Derek Llambias and Lee Charnley could do the deal in this window.

"It has become obvious this season that the team and the club have done exceptionally well, and Mike Ashley has backed me to bring this player to the club.

"In the short-term, of course, he is at the Africa Cup of Nations, but the competition he will bring to our squad when he joins up with us should inspire the players and reassure them of this club's ambition."

The player himself was thrilled to make the move.

"I would like to thank everybody for their welcome, and for inviting me to sign for the club," said Cisse, who will wear the number nine shirt.

"It is an honour to play for such a big club and I am looking forward to it. I want to pay back the confidence the club have shown in me, and give the supporters something to be proud of.

"I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt, and when I spoke with the manager he made it very clear how important this shirt is. I will treat it with the respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt."

Cisse became available following Cologne frontman Sebastien Freis's arrival at Freiburg, and while Ba has been linked with a move away from Tyneside this month Pardew suggested that Cisse's signing could help keep the forward at St James' Park.

"I spoke to Demba about Papiss, and he cannot wait to join up with his teammate in Newcastle," said the manager.

  6. how exciting! it's a good time to be a toon fan; like when KK got the toon army moving, no? this guy looks good, but the point for me is it helps to keep our other good players(Ba, Cabaye, Tiote, Colo, Jonas, Krul, Santon; hell they're all good, these are just the ones getting speculated on. heck, even shola feels consistently good at the moment!)
Howay toon army, let's roar les gars (google translate) on to a top four finish and see what Mr Ashley can find for us in the summer, even!

  10. The Makems thought they were after Cisse! Ha Ha! Martin O'Neil is eating his tracksuit and about to start on the players! Seriously, though - why don't they reschedule ACON in the summer so we don't lose key players? I can't wait to see our new strike force in action, meanwhile the fixtures are canny enough not to miss them. Oh happy days!

  11. Ok ok so we (spurs) have spent 2 years looking for a striker along with Liverpool, Arsenal and maybe Chelsea also very keen to sign a new striker. Newcastle have snuck under and grabbed an absoloute bargain in my opinion hes a very very good striker. I just have a slight niggle if this signing works out well Newcastle are back in for a strong challenge on 4th spot. And credit where its due to Ashley all us fans from all clubs said he was a joke (dont pretend you thought he was great all along) but hes ended up returning every penny of the money from Caroll and bought excelently. And remember when he sacked Hughton? all premier league football fans thought the same "Mad hes doing a great job" so in steps the replacement chosen by Ashley and wow. You deserve where to be where you are or higher. I think we all need to admit it but its hurts to say......"I think Ashley was right and we may have been wrong and inpatient all along, his patience paid off" (hate or love them credit where its due)

  13. Looks like a decent buy, 37 goals in 65 games in Germany is a good return, but he's another African, they bugger off to that daft cup of nations every year, would have preferred players who were available all season, I've never understood why any team, especially one with a small squad would want to sign players who are unavailable for 2 of the toughest month's every year !
