Cup run can go on - Trollope

Sun 17 Feb, 08:30 PM

Bristol Rovers first-team coach Paul Trollope reckons his League One side are more than capable of progressing to the last four of the FA Cup.Rovers dominated their fifth-round tie with Championship side Southampton at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday and deservedly progressed when striker Rickie Lambert scored with a deflected 84th-minute free-kick.

And with other Championship sides Barnsley, Cardiff, West Brom and Sheffield United still in the competition Trollope believes his team's run could continue.

He said: "It depends who we draw.

"There are some big clubs left but there are still a lot of Championship clubs left and we can't wait for the draw on Monday.

"We have gone out and beaten Southampton so I see no reason why we can't beat another side."

Lambert impressed in attack for Rovers throughout, having an earlier effort ruled out for a foul, but Trollope paid testament to his side's work ethic after they bossed the game.

He insisted that the result was not a shock to him as he fully expected his underdogs to beat the managerless Saints.

He said: "We are a team and that is the main thing.

"We haven't got much individual brilliance but we play together and try and pass it and when we have to dig in and defend then we do that as well.

"I do the preparation on the opposition and analyse our weaknesses and strengths and if I'm honest I expected us to win.

"That's no disrespect to Southampton because they are a good side with some excellent players but I know what my players are capable of and I had a real belief that they could win."

Meanwhile Southampton joint caretaker-manager Jason Dodd admitted he was still in the dark over when a permanent manager will be appointed at St Mary's.

Dodd has been in charge of first-team affairs along with John Gorman since George Burley left to take the vacant Scotland manager's post last month but has seen his side fail to win in their last five games.

He said: "We haven't got a clue when the situation might change.

"I've been in the game long enough to know that results are what it's all about. We are not getting those results so obviously people are going to start asking questions.

"We understand that and we got the players up to go out there and put on a performance.

"But we can only do so much. We take all the flak, that comes with the territory but it is disappointing when you come into a game where there is a possibility of a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and some of the lads aren't up for it.

"That is hard to believe."
